Description

May 4 1926.
' H. LAHNDORFF COMBINATION MATCH sun AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER Filed Nov. 20, 1925 INVENTOR a ATTORNEY Patented May 4,1926. I i I p UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE.
Application filed November 20, 1925. Serial N0. '70,214.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Llinnoonrr. a citizen of Germany, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Match.
Safes and Cigarette Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
The mam ob]ect of this mvention is to provide a combination match safe and 01garette igniter which has for its main object to provide such a device for lgIlltlIlg a 01garette during wind or stormy weather, the device shielding the match from the wind or rain.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the match safe and cigarette igniter in partly opened position.
' Figure 2 is a perspective View, showing the igniter in closed position. I
Figure 3 is a sectional elevational view, taken on line 22 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the ends of a box-like structure, said sides being joined by sides 11 and topped by walls 12 which serve as retainers for a cover. The cover consists of a box which is open atthe bottom and one of its sides 13 is provided with an opening 1a near one of its corners, Said opening being encircled by a leather ring 15. The interior of the box is separated into two chambers 16 and 17 by dividing walls 18. The chamber 16 communicates with the opening 14: formed in the side 13 of the cover, and in this chamber, slightly distanced from the end wall 10, a wire mesh grill 19 is mounted. Atthe opposite end of the chamber 16, a striking medium 20 is seated on the floor 21 of the box and serves to be engaged by the heads 22 of matches for igniting said matches. The roof 2 1 of the cover of the box-like structure has a cut-out portion formed on one of its corners on whose edges,
hinge sleeves 25 are provided. These hinge sleeves cooperate with additional hinge sleeves upon a trap door 26 which is adapted to be retained in the closed position by the springs 27 mounted between the hinge sleeves. The forward sidewall 28of the cover of the safe is provided with a longitudinally recessed channel 29 at one of whose ends an off-set cut-out portion 80' is provided. I
The match safe is adapted to Serve two purposes. One of these purposes is for the safe storage of matches in the chamber 17 so as to keep them dry. The remaining chamber 16 of the match safe is adapted to permit the ready ignition of cigarettes in a wind or storm. A cigarette is insertedinto the opening 14: until it contacts with the grill 19. The striking plate 20, being mounted at the end opposite to the grill in the chamber 16, permits a match totravel from one end of the box to the grill 19, and in this space of time, the match is frictionally ignited by being brought into contact with the striking surface of the element 20. The match is inserted angularly into the off-set cut-out portion 30 and the trap door 26 is spread upwardly to approximately the. position shown in Figure 3. hen the door is spread to the open or partly open position, the match is moved along the longitudinal channel 29 to the opposite end of the chamber 16 By quickly moving the-match over the striking surface toward the grill 19, the match is ignited at approximately the point where it comes in contact with the grill and the person using the device is at the same time inhaling thru the cigarette, causing the flames from the ignited match to ignite the end of the cigarette, after which the latter may be removed from the opening 14.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a box-like structure containing two compartments arranged side by side, a cover closing said box-like structure, one of said compartments forming a match storage chamber, the adjacent compartment being provided for igniting matches, a grill in the adjacent compartment and a striking element located in said compartment and spaced from the grill, a hinged trap door in the cover adapted to be opened by the insertion of a match.
2. A device of the class described comprising a box-like structure containing two compartments arranged side by side, a cover closing said box-like structure, one of said compartments forming a match storage chamber, the ad acent compartment being provided for igniting matches, a grill in the adjacent compartment and a striking elenient located in said compartment and spaced from the grill, a hinged trap door in the cover adapted to be opened by the insertion of a match, said cover having an opening therein adjacent the grill, a striker element in the compartment containing the grill, a channel in said cover, and an off-set cut-out portion on one end of said channel adapted to receive the head of a match for insertion into one of the compartments to 10 ignite said match on the striking element and permit moving of the match from the striking element to the position in front of the grill.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY LAI-INDORFF.
