GARTER.
7 Application filed May 11, 1925. Serial No. 29,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. INK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Orange, county of Essex,State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garters and like articles employing elastic or non-elastic fabric.
An object of'the invention is to provide an'i-mproved form of garter for each leg whereby the part subject to wear or soiling or thezlike maybe readily replaced with. respect to the remainder of the garter. My invention is applicable for the forms of garters employing elastic or other material and thus permitting ready replacement of the elastic or other material when deteriorated.
. Another object ofmy invention isto provide a pad member separate from the elastic or other material member.
My invention accordingly provides for. the merchandising of. a garter of a plurality of parts for each leg and the sale of'each of these parts as replaceable parts. 7
Pursuant to the most preferred form of myinvention, the garter comprises, a pad member having the usual or approved form of clasp'for gripping the sock, stocking or the like and further having the usual button preferably of metal for connection with an eyelet and further provided with a member of my coupler preferably of metal, said pad member being provided with fiaps or like extensions of fabric or other suitable material and projecting from the pad member to protect the metal button and the metal coupler combined with a band member comprising a band of elastic or other material secured at its one end to an eyelet of metalor other suitable material for repeated detachable connection with the aforesaid button, the opposite end of said band being secured to the coacting member of my-coupler of metal or other suitable material, the members of my coupler being readily coupled when assembling the two parts. When it is desired to replace any worn or broken part, my coupler affords uncoupling of the same.
The members of my coupler are formed. to be connected to one another by either slidpush-over movement.
Further features and'objects of the invenbers; and
member from the leg ofthe user,
tion will be more fully understood from the following detail description and the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 ma perspective View of one form of my invention as applied toa garter, showing my pad member and my elastic or other material member coupled by my coupler; V
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my pad member of the garter shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my band member shown in. Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of a modified form of my two-part coupler;
Fig. 5 is a further modified form of my two-part coupler;
Fig. 6 is a detail view on an enlarged scale of a part of one of my coupler mem Fig. 7 is a detail View of a modified form of eyelet forrpush-over connectionand reverse disconnection.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 30f the drawings, the pad member 10 is of any desired outline and in Fig. 2 is illustrated of general hexagonal outline, having sewed or otherwise secured at its side'll the loop 12 for suspending the clasp 18 usually of metal and coacting with the button 1A carried by the tab '15, also sewed or otherwise secured to the side 11v of the pad member 10. At another suit-able side 16 is sewed the'button member 17 as by the stitchings 18', which button member 17 is of theusual or other approved form and coacts with the eyelet member'19 carried by the band member 20 as is more particularly described hereinafter. At the side '21 of the pad member 10 is secured the member 22 of my coupler; such securement is by st-itchings 23 or equivalent. The coacting coupler member 24: is carried by the band member 20 as is set forth more particularly hereinafter. I I My pad member 10 is further provided with the extension 25 secured by stitches or equivalent to the side 16 to which side the button member 17 is secured. I The extension 25 may be of single or of doublethickness as preferred. The extension 26 is secured by stitchings or the like to the side 21 of the pad member 10 to which side my coupler member 22 is also. secured. The extension 26 corresponds to the extension 25 and may be of single or double thickness.
. Theextensions 25, QG accordingIy project A from the pad member 10 and protect the metal button 17 and metal coupler member 22 from the leg of the user.
The extension 25, 26 are preferably of the same material or of like colored material as the material of my band member 20, thereby enhancing the appearance of the garter when the parts thereof are ussen'ibled.
My band member is provided with the usual buckle 27 preferably applied thereto at the end of the band member 20 at which the eyelet member 19 is secured, thus providing for adjustment as will be understood. At the opposite end of my band member 20 is secured by stitchings or the like the coupler member 24 coacting with my aforesaid coupler member 22.
My pad member 10 is shown in Fig. 2 as manufactured and before being coupled with my band member 20. My band member 20 is shown in Fig. 3 as manufactured and before being coupled with my pad member 10.
My coupler member 22, see also Figs 4 and 5, preferably comprises the base portion 30 having the symmetrically arranged extensions 31, 32 on each of which is disposed a .post 33, having an enlarged head 34. Such enlarged head 34 is of general conical formation, the purpose of which is set forth more fully hereinafter.
The coupler member 22 further comprises the loop portion 35 having a slot 36 for receiving one side of the stit-chings 23 for securing the coupler member 22 to my pad member 10.
' As indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, my coaeting coupler member 24 is of wire or flat stock of metal or other suitable material and formed of suitable shape by dieing and punching to provide the eyelet members 37, 33 spaced from one another corresponding to the spacing of the posts 33 of my coupler member 22. The diameter of each of the eyelet members 37, 38 is slightly less than the maximum diameter of the conical head 34 of the post 33 and is greater than the diameter of each post 33, to thereby afford the coupling of my coupler member 22 with my coupler member 24 by simple push-over operation, which is facilitated by the slots 39, 39 in the coupler member 24, to afford su'liicient yielding of the material of my coupler member 24 while the respective heads 3-4 are being pushed through the eyelet members 37 38 and also to provide the desired resiliency to restore the material of my coupler member 24 to its normal position after the posts 33, 33 have been locked within the eyelets 37, 38, respectively.
In Fig. 4, I have shown at 40, a modification of my coupler member 24 and comprising the eyelet members 41, 41, spaced similar to the eyelet members 37 38, and provided with the converging slots 42, 42 terminating within the eyelets 41, 41, thus en abling the posts 33, 33, having the conical heads 34- or other suitable enlarged heads to be positioned within the eyelets 41, 41 by simple sliding movement of the respective posts 33, 33 through the converging slots respectively.
In Fi g. 5, I have illustrated a modification of the coupler member 43 having a number of loop members through which the material of my band member 20 is threaded to obviate sewing the free end of the material 20.
In Fig. 7, I have indicated another form of coupler member 44 in substitution of the coupler member 24, and comprises the body portion 45 having two or more extensions 46 spaced from one another similar to the aforesaid extensions 37, 38, each extension 46 being provided with an opening 47, the material at the edge of said opening 47 being serrated or notched or the like to efiect the desired yielding of the material of such serration upon pushing through the enlarged head 34 of a post 33, and to provide for similar action when withdrawing a post 33 therefrom.
It will be understood that the head 34, see Fig. 6, for each post 33 may be varied in dimension and shape by appropriate dieing out of the material, for carrying out the purpose of my invention.
From the above, it will be apparent that my invention attains an improved form of garter in which each garter is formed of a pad member separate from the band member. Pursuant to my invention, the pad members are manufactured as separate parts and the band members manufactured as separate parts. In the event of soiling or damaging a pad member, a new pad member may be substituted for the same upon disconnecting my coupler. In a like manner, a new band member may be substituted when it is soiled or when its elastic is deteriorated, upon uncoupling my coupler member.
It will also appear that my invention is applicable for other articles similar to garters.
l'Vhereas, I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a garter or like article, the combination of a pad member, aband member, single pivotal means for securing one end of said band member to said pad member adjacent to one side of said pad member and multiple point connecting and disconnecting means for the opposite end of said band member disposed adjacent to an opposite side of said pad member.
2. In a garter or like article, the combination of a pad member, a pair of extensions of fabric secured to said pad member, a band member, single pivotal means for securing one end of said band member to said.
pad member adjacent to and exteriorly of one of said extensions and multiple point connecting and disconnecting means for the opposite end of said band member disposed adjacent to and exteriorly of said other extension, said multiple point connecting and isconnecting means comprising a member carrying a plurality of posts, each post hav ing an enlarged head and further comprising a coacting member provided With a corresponding plurality of openings for respectively receiving said posts and retainingthe same.
3. In a garter or like article, the combination or a pad member, a pair of extensions of fabric secured to said pad member, a band member, single pivotal means for securing one end of said band member to said pad member adjacent to and eXterio-rly of one of said extensions and multiple point connecting and disconnecting means for theopposite end of said band member disposed adjacent to and exteriorly of said other eX- tension, said multiple point connecting and disconnecting means comprising a member carrying a plurality of posts, each post having an enlarged head and a coacting member provided with a corresponding plurality of openings for respectively receiving said enlarged heads under pressure to eilect locking and separability of said members as desired.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification this 7th day of May 1925.
