s. NEWMAN SUSPENDER Filed AuEl. 14, 1925 F, Q [9. INVENTOR- F1a. 4. Q. 5. SWW/WWW@ TTORNEY SWW Patented (ict. 25, 1927.
U i I'F., STATES SAMUEL NEU/"MAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
S''SPENDER.
Application filed August The objectof my invention is to produce a simple, efficient, and highly serviceable suspender, possessing marked utility.
In producing my suspender, I do not sew any part thereof, nor do I together.
Another feature consists in forming the rear tabs and the suspender shoulder straps at their folded end, so that the said rear tabs can be unhooked, thus the suspender need not be unbuttoiied at the rear.
My Suspenders are very light and will not slide on the shoulders of the wea-rer.
My new suspender is very durable and retains its normal position, into which it has been placed by the wearer. f
The shoulder straps are made of one piece and this piece is folded at the middle of its length and held together by button rivets.
My Suspenders can be cheaply manufactured.
Another feature of my invention renders the suspenders capable of being worn under the shirt, as well as over the shirt.
In the accompanying' drawing forming a part of this specification:
F ig. 1, is a view in elevation of a complete suspender,
Fig. 2, is an enlarged view of one tab,
Fig. 3, is a section on line 3*?) of Fig. 2.
Fig'. 4, is a detail in elevation of one rubber tab. shown extended. in dotted lines,
'Fig'. 5, is a view of a strip of material from which. tabs are stamped or cut,
Fig. 6, is an enlarged detail of the loop joint at back of Suspenders, showingone piece construction, and a view in elevation of the plate used in this joint,
Fig. 7, is a section taken on line 7-7 of F ig. 6,
Fig. 8, is a view in elevation of an attachinent used by me when the Suspenders are worn under the shirt.
Fig. 9 is an elevation of the hook plate shown detached from the suspender.
In order to describe my invention I will refer to the drawing, in which 1 and 2 are shoulderbraces or straps of the suspender, made of one piece of material, which, at the rear, are folded or loop-ed together at 3, and at this point are provided with a. depending strap 4, and an engagement hook 5 is fastened at the end of this strap, and I provide a frame eye 6 which is on the back tab 7 for engaging said hook 5; at the front ends of the shoulder brace straps 1 and 2,
sew the parts 14.., 1925. Serial No. 50,321.
I place links as 8 which are attached to said ends, so that at their lower ends, :it 9. I can attach depending straps 10 carrying,- at their lower extremity the hooks 12; tabs 13 carry at their upper ends, frame eyes 14, which engage with the hooks 12.
It will be seen and readily understood that at thel top the tabs 7 and 13 loop over the lower part of the eyes 6 and 14, and are held in position by rivet or eyeletflG.
I may use any attachment for lengthening or shortening the suspenders, one form being shown at 17.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the straps 4 and 1 0 :ire made of an elastic material or rubber and the shoulder braces 1 and 2 are made of a non-elastic material. and the tabs 7 and 13 are made of leather.
In F 1, the tab 7 is shown detached from the strap 4 but it may be readily attached and detached so that the pantalooiis can .readily be let down' and pulled up witliout interfering with the rest. of the clothes.
In F ig. 1, it will be seen that at the ioint 3, the shoulder brace straps 1 and 2 are folded over onto one another and held intact by .a rivet button 18, to be more fully described her-einafter. Y l
In Fig. 4, I show tabs 2O made of rubber, looped over at thel top and fastened to a frame eyelet 21, and having button holes 22 at their lower ends, the dotted lines in this figure show the rubber tab in a stretched or extended position.
When rubber tabs, as `iust described, are employed, the straps 4 and 10 are dispensed with and the tabs are hooked directliT onto the ends of the shoulder brace straps'l and 2, both at front and at the rear. i
The loop joint 3, where the shoulder straps land 2 are folded together, shown the saine in Fig. 1, as in Fig. 6, except that in Fig. 1, the strap 4, is united at the lottom thereof, and the hook 5 is on the strap 4 whereas in Fig. 6, the frame plate 25, made of metal or any suitable material desired, has the hook 26 at its lower extremity.
In Fig. 6, the shoulder strap ends 1 and 2 are folded across a plate or frame 25, which plate carries a hook 2G at its lower extremity.
Said strap ends are folded up and over as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 after thus folded the shoulder straps are held together by rivet buttons 18. It will be seen that the shoulder strap 2 is folded over the shoulder strap l,
while' the plate 25 lies between the back 26 of the straps l and 2 and the folded portions. y
In Fig. 5 I show a strap of narrow material out of which the tabs may be cut, or punched out asshown by the dotted lines. This Vmakes it possible to make these tabs at a lower cost. A
The Suspenders as heretofore described in detail, are to be worn in the ordinary Way, on the outsidel of the shirt. I will now describe the same as worn under the Shirt., When the Suspenders are thus worn,' Ipreferably use only a single tabat the rear, and single tabs at each side of the front.Y I then attach one of the eyelets 80 Vshown in F ig. 8, to the lower end of each tab by vinserting the eyelet through the Y button-hole in the manner shown in the U. S. Patent No. 748,282, Dec. 29, 1903. When the eyelets are thus attached, the buttons on the trousers, covered by portions of the shirt, may be inserted in the portions 3l of the eyelets, and parts of the shirt may occupy the portions '32, of the eyelets. By this operation, the material pulled through the slot 32 wedges and crowds inA said slot and is thus lirmly held and gripped and can only be dislodged by human agency.
It will be understood th at I can make and form the various parts which go to make up the Suspenders of any shape or contour and of any desired material other than hereinV specified and I wish to be understood Awith any kind or style of suspender, and
in connection with Suspenders made from any Vkind of material.
What I claim as new and my invention and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 2*- l. In Suspenders, shoulder straps, connected together at theirY rear ends and formed of inelastic material, an elastic eX- tension strap connected to the rear ends of the shoulder straps, elastic extension straps connected to the front ends of the shoulder straps, tabs to engage buttons on trousers, and means connecting said tabs Vto the eX- tension straps, said means including ahook and eye fastening topermit quick attachment or detachment of a tab from its associated extension strap.
2. In Suspenders, a strip folded intermediate its ends into V-shape to provide shoulder straps, a hook having a substantially triangular portion arranged withinthe fold and concealed by the folded portion of the strip, and fastening means connecting the folded portions of the strip. Y f
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature* at Cincinnati, Ohio, this 12th day of August, 1925.
Y SAMUEL NEWMAN.
