EYES FOR DOLLS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed August 30, 1924. Serial Nb. 735,088.
more city and State of Maryland, has in-.
vented certain new and useful Improve ments in Eyes for Dolls and the like, of,
which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin eyes for dolls and thelike, and has for its particular object the provision of an eye construction capable of beingmanufactured at a comparatively small cost and one Whichcan be easily and quickly assembled and efiiciently mounted in. a doll head and held against accidental displacement therefrom.
A further ob 'ect of this invention is the provision of an eye construction for dolls or the like, stamped from a single blank, and adapted to'be drawn and mounted on a shaft in a doll head.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a blank stamped to provide a pair of eyes relatively spaced apart and a shaft adapted to have the eyes mounted thereon and-positioned in a doll head, the
stamping of the eyes and placing them in a position to coincide with the eye openings in a doll head.
Heretofore it has beennecessary in making the eyes and assembling in the 'doll head, to have many operations, such a making the eyes in separate parts, the mounting and sealing of the eyes on a shaft, and-the mounting of a shaft in a dollhead. This has been an extremely expensive proposition and has added to the cost of the doll materially. Now to overcome this serious ob jection, 1 have brought forth the following invention, and my particular aim n this;
invention is to cut the cost of manufacturing to a minimum, which necessarily reduces the ultimate cost of the finished doll. The primary object in this accomplishment is the making of the eyes out of a single blank, a shaft, mounting the eyes on :the shaft,
and the mounting of the shaft in the doll 'blank and fastened in a single operation in a doll head. I
Another object of this invention s the provision of a shaft so fastened in a doll 1 J. l Vrson, citihead and having secured thereon the eyes so as to permit relative lateral movement of the eyes without destroying the anchor ing means of the shaft.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a pair of eyes stamped from a single blank provided with trunnions, said trunnions adapted to fit in brackets carried by a doll head, so as to permit the eyes to be readilymounted therein.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a pair of eyes stamped from a single blank including a weight carrying member and stops, which stops limit the movementsof the eyes in open and closed position.
lVit-h these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings, v
Figure 1 is a planview of the blank from which the eyes andweight carrying'member are stamped,
Figure 2 is a side elevational blank,
Figure 3 is a rear plan view the eyes and weight carrying drawn position,
Figure 4 is a side, elevationalview of the eyes and weigl'it carrying member mounted on the shaft and having the weight at' tached thereto, i
.Figure 5 is a rear elevational view of a doll head illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invent-ion in active, working position, a
Figure 6 is an enlarged elevational view showing a slightly modified form of my in vention, 1 v
Figure 7 is a fragmentary transverse sec-' tional view illustrating the modified form of. the invention in active position, showing the eyes open, I
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view of the preferred form of the invention illustrating the eyes in open position,
Figure 9 is a: detailed, side elevational view, partly broken away, illustrating the eyes in closed position, and I Figure 10 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view illustrating the modified form of a fastening means for anchoring the shaft in a doll head. 7
Referring to the drav 'ings, the numeral 5 view of the I illustrating member in indicates a blank of metal stamped to provide a pair of relatively spaced circular members 6 constituting eyes, these members being connected by a bridge 7 which has a depending circular weight carrying memher 8. The members (3 are provided at diametrically opposite points with stop lugs 5), and at the extreme outer edgeswith bearing members ill, the bearing mei'nbers ll) being provided with openings 11, so that the member 5 in, its entirety may be mounted on a shaft.
The construction justdescribed, is struck in a. single operation from a, single blank and constitutes the entire eye construction, it being only necessary to draw the eyes into the position shown in Figures 3 and i, and provide the eye members with suitable lithograph work 12, and the weight carrying member 8 with suitable weight material 13. lVhen the member 5 is drawn in the manner just described, it provides semi-circular members (5 and 8 in cross section and at the same time the members .10 are bent at right angles to the bridge 7 so as to form bearings for a suitable shaft in order that the eyes proper may be mounted in a doll head A.
'To properly position the member 5 in its entirety in a. doll head A, I provide suitable L-shaped shaft let, the longer arm of which extends through the bearings 10 of the member 5 and has its extreme outer end flattened as at 15 so as to prevent the memher 5 from slipping laterally therefrom. The shaft 14 is then secured in the doll head A by soldering the shorter arm 16 thereof to a portion of the doll head as at 17. The fastening means 17, such as solder or the like, extend from a point at the extreme end of the shorter arm to within a spaced distance of the longer arm so as to leave suiiicient resiliency in the longer arm to permit it to be moved laterally in event pressure should be placed on the eyes 6.
It is to be noted that when the eyes are mounted as illustrated in Figures 5 and S, that the eyes of member 5 when in open position are arranged at. an angle of about forty-live degrees, and when the head is laid down the weight carrying member will move the eyes on the shaft 14 to the position shown in Figure 9, and the stops 9 will limit the movements of the eyes in these two directions by engagement with portions of the doll head A;
In assembling this preferred construction, it is only necessary to stamp the blank as in Figures '1 and 2, draw the blank as in Figures 3 and 4t, and provide the members 6 and 8 with a lithograph material 12 and weight 13, respectively, mount the eyes on the shaft 1st, ii the shaft by the means 17 in a doll head, and thedevice is then assembled complete and ready for sale.
New referring to the slight modification shown in Figures (5 and 7, the blank 5 is identical with that shown in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, the only material change is the drawing of the l.)earing members ll) into trunnions '18, which trunhions are mounted in suitable brackets 19 secured in the doll head A. The brackets it) may be secured by any suitable fastening means, such as solder or the like, it only being necessary when assembling to snap the trunnions 13 into the brackets 19 in the position shown in Figures 6 and 7. The operation of the eye being identical with the preferred form, it is not believed that further matter descriptive of this modification is necessary.
Now referring to the modification shown in Figure 10, it pertains particularly to the shaft 14, which shaft has its smaller arm provided with a substantially rectangular web member 20, which provides a sealing means or securing means whereby the shaft may be embedded and securely fastened in a composition or papier-mach doll head B. The only time it is necessary to use this type of construction of shaft is when it is desired to fasten the eyes in a. composition doll: head, which may be made of papiermache, plaster of Paris, or the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
An eye structure for doll heads, comprising a blank stamped to provide a pair of spaced connected members forming spherical eye members, the terminal of the connecting portion depending therefrom and constituting a weight, carrying member, stop lugs struck from the blank and forming a part of said spherical members, bearings struck from said blank and forming a part of said spherical members, and a shaft mounted in said bearing members of the blank whereby the latter may be secured in a doll head.
In testimony whereof he hereunto aliixes \VALTER J. lVISCI-I.
his signature.
