Description
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JAMES HENRY WINSLow, oE LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN PRESERVE-C-AN HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,161, dated December 22,1874; application filed November 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. WrNsLoW, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Preserve-Can Holder, of which the following is a Specification:
My invention consists of a pair of rubberlined clamping-jaws, with the contrivance for opening and closing them and holding them closed; also, with olampscrews or other contrivance for detachably connecting the clamping-jaws to a table or other support, all contrived and adapted for holding glass fruit-j ars while screwing the covers on or off, the said holder being contrived so as to hold jars of different Sizes.
Figure I is a plan view of a jar-holder of my invention, with some parts represented in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line it oo of Fig. 1 5 and Fig. 3 is a plan View of a holder with a different contrivanceof the operating and holding apparatus.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent a pair of curved clamping-jaws, pivoted together at one end, C, and rubber-lined on the inside D. One of said ver, J, may be used for working the movable jaw, and a ratchet-bar, K, and a catch-pawl, L, may be used for holding it when closed on the jar.
Any approved means of working and holding the movable jaw may be used, and I do not, therefore, limit myself, in thisrespect, to any particular contrivance.
The jaws are facedon the sidewhich clamps against the bottle with rubber, or it may be any flexible substance, although rubber is the best for the glass to bed in, so as to hold rmly Without breaking, and, if found best, the surfaces pressing against the glass may be corrugated or otherwise roughened.
The jars are set in the space between the jaws, and they are forced up tight against the jars, which are thereby held much firmer than they can be by hand, with much less labor,
and by one person, whereas it requires twoone to hold the jar and the other to turn the cap-when done by hand.
Having thus described my invention,I Ielaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the curved clampingjaws A B, pivoted together at C, and elastic facing material D, when provided with attachving-clamps E and operating and holding apparatus, substantially as specified.
JAMES H. WINSLOW. Witnesses:
ALBERT KIMBALL, F. D. MAYO.
