To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILHELM MAX RooK STROH, factory director, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Klein-Sedlitz, near Pirna-on-the-Elbe, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrading-Tools, of which the following is a complete specification.

Ordinary emery-tools or emery-pads used in workshops have many disadvantages. In the case of the former the emery-cloth is sometimes placed completely around the tool and held bythe hand, so that a portion of the cloth is rendered useless. In the case of emcry-pads often they can be used but once, since they are subject to great wear and the grains of emery do not hold so well on the wood as on the cloth. Polishing by oiling the Work and distributiugemery-powder thereon,

which is then brought into closer contact with;

the work by means of wooden pads, has sometimes been resorted to, but possesses certain disadvantages.

This invention relates to an abrading-tool which obviates the before-mentioned disadvantages, since a suitably Wide strip of emery-cloth is connected to the working surface of the tool and can be easily removed in a simple manner and other strips substituted therefor.

A tool made according to this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the tool with the holding device for the strip of emery-cloth open. Fig. 2 shows the same with the emery-cloth therein. Fig; 3'is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a plan; and Fig. 5, a plan, partially in section.

a is a piece of wood formed with a handle at one end provided with a recess in which the clamp-jaws b and c are placed. The lower jaw Z) swings about a hinge d, while the jaw 0 moves like tongs about a pin f, which passes through the two jaws. The upper jaw c,

which is formed as a double-armed lever, is movably connected to the inner end of a pin g, which passes through a recess in the wood a. \Vhen pressure is applied to the springlever 11 on the wood a, the pin g, and with it the arm is of the jaw c, is pressed downwardly until the pin g acts on the jaw 19 and the latter rotates about the hinge d, so that the jaws clamp-jaws move back into the recess when the cloth has been stretched. By this means the cloth is tightly drawn around the edge 0 of the wood a and is consequently properly stretched. The spring 19 serves for increasing the tension on the ping when the jaws are Open.

As will be evident, instead of emery-cloth other material may he used-as, for example, sand or glass paper.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a holder, of a pair of clamping-jaws carried thereby-and adapted to detachably clamp one end of a strip of abrading material and means adapted to detachably secure the other end of said strip of to detachably clamp one end of a strip of abrading material, means carried by the holder adapted to operate upon said jaws to open them and means carried by the holder adapted to detachably secure the other end of said strip of'material, for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a holder, of a pair of clamping-jaws carried thereby, an operatinglever carried by the holder, a pin carried by thelever and connected with one of the clamping-jaws and the inner end of said pin being adapted to operate upon the other clampingjaw when the operating-lever is depressed whereby to cause the jaws to open to receive one end of a strip of abrading material and means carried by the holder adapted to detachably secure the opposite end of said strip of material for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a holder,a pair of clamping-jaws carried thereby, an operating-lever carried by the holder, a pin carried by said lever and connected at its inner end with one of said clamping-jaws, said pin being adapted to also operate upon the other jaw when the operating-lever is depressed whereby to cause the jaws to open to receive one end of astrip of abrading material, a spring secured WILHELM MAX ROCKSTROI-I.
