y Application filed June 23, 1924. Serial No. 721,926.
e T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HORACE JONES, a citizen of the United lStates, residing at Port Arthur, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements Lin Swings, of which the 'following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined bench and swing, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the device can be made a straight legged bench, a rocker, bench or a swing by suspending the device from a ceiling or other support.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding part-s throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a rear view of the device used as a rocker.
Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 Of Figure 2.
Figure lis an end view with the parts in a position to make a swing or a straight legged bench.
Figure 5 is a rear view with the straight legs in position.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Figure 4l.
Figures 8, 9 and 10 are detail views.
As shown in these views, the device comprises a seat part 1 and a back 2, these parts being formed in any desired manner. Straight legs 3 are hinged to the ends of the seat part l, as shown at 4, so that these legs can be swung upwardly against the bottom of the seat, as shown in full lines in Figure 1 and in dotted lines in Figure 5, and held in this position by the hooks 5 is a. section on line 7-7 of Figwhich engage the eyes 6 on the legs. These legs are held in extended and operative position by means of the turn-buckle braces 7 which are pivotally secured to the bottom of the seat and have their outer ends hooked to engage the eyes 6 on the legs. Rods 8 having Jturn-buckles 9, extend longitudinally Vcesses in the legs for the rods 10.
under the seat and through holes in the eX- tended portions of the end pieces Of the seat and are. provided with eyes at their outer ends through which pass rods 10, to the ends of which are secured the rocker legs 11 so that these rocker llegs are hingedly connected with the ends of the seat 'so that they can be swung downwardly and substituted for the straight legs 3 or they can bev swung upwardly to form ends for the device, as shown in Figure 4.: These rocker legs are held in their downward position by means of the turn-buckle braces 7 which engage eyes 12.011 the rocker legs and they are held in their upper position by means of the latches 13 which are of L-shape and are slidably mounted in the eyes 1li on the back 2 and are adapted to?v engage the eyes 15 on the rocker legs. By attaching chains or cables 16 tol the rocker legs, as
shown in Figure ll, the device can be used as a. swing by fastening the upper ends of the chains to a suitable support, such as a ceiling or the like. In this case it would be well to swing the legs upwardly into inoperative position.
As shown in detail in Figure 8 the rocker legs 11 are secured to the rods 10 by the U-shaped straps 17 which are bolted to the legs and form circular bearings with re- The turn-buckle braces 7 are connected with the bottom of the seat by the brackets 7', as
shown in detail in Figure 9, each bracket being formed with depending eyes which receive an eye on the brace between them, the pivot pin passing through the eyes. This construction prevents any play in the braces, As shown in dotted lines in Figure 5, when the legs 3 are swung upwardly the braces are swung in opposite directions and have their free ends suitably fastened to the legs 3 by screw hooks or the like. This device can be used in ordinary swing frames and it will be seen that the one article will serve as a bench, arocker or the seat part of a swing. Thus the device takes the place of three articles of furniture. When the device is not being used as a swing the chains 16 can be unhooked from the same and swung up out of the way. The seat part is suitably braced, as shown, so that it will be of'suiiicient strength to serve the purpose for which it is intended.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide means itor using they device a straight legged bench or seat or as ajrooker or as a swing, the parts being easily and quickly adjustable to form the -desired de -y vice.
It is thought 'from the foregoing' descrip`A tion that the advantages and.l novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of thejseveral parts, provided that such Changes fall Withinthe scope ot' the appended claims.
V-hat I claim iszl, A devficeot' the Class described comprisino a, seat `and a back, leg members hinge@ ly connected with the seat and adapt-` ed; to be` disposed ina vertical position beneat-li the ends-oi the seat or swung upwardly beneath the seat, means for retaining said legsl in either position rocker members hingedly connected to then ends of the Seat and adapted to be disposed beneath the seat o rr moved upwardly to form end portions for theseat and means for supporting the rocker members in either position.
2. A device of .the class described comprising a seat and a back, leg members hingedly connected with the seat and adapted lto be disposed in a vertical position beneath the ends of thejseat or swung up Wardly beneath the. seat, adjustable rods for supporting the leg members in a vertical position beneath the ends of the seat, hooks `for supporting the legs beneath the seat, rocker members hingedly connected to the ends of the seat and adapted to be disposed beneath the seat or moved upwardly to 'form end portions for the seat, adjustable rods for supporting the rocker members beneath th'e `seatand hooksfor supporting the rocker members at the ends of the seat.
In 'testimony whereof I aix my signature.
