B.F.Malott INVENTOR "I WITNESS:
o rr a 1:: 3 TA 1" s BENJAMIN F. MALOTT, OF GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SWING.
Application filed July 23,
T 0 all whom-it may 0092061 01.:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. MALoTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined benches and swings and has for an object the provision of mean whereby the same may be quickly and easily adjusted for either use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for accomplishing the above, which means includes a reversible back, together with a fOlding foot rest, the latter also serving a a support, when the invention is used as a bench.
i/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention showing the same in use as a swing.
Figure 2 is an end view showing the iii-- vention in use as a bench.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the invention in use as a swing, one position of the back and one foot rest being shown by dot-- ted lines.
Figure 1 is a plan view with the invention raised as in Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view with the invention arranged as in Figure 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention includes a seat 10 and a back 11, which is connected to the seat in a manner hereinafter described.
The seat may be of any desired construction, the one shown including a frame formed of longitudinal bars 12 and transverse bars 13, while mounted upon this frame is a plurality of spaced strips 11. The bars 12 of the frame are extended be yond the ends of the strips 141 and have secured thereto uprights 15, whose free ends are connected by arms 17 so as to provide arm rests for the seat.
The back 11 is formed of end bars 18, which are connected by strips 19, a notched cleat 20 being secured to each of the bars 18 for receiving the lower edge of the lowermost strip 19.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1922. 1921. serial No. 487,080.
The lower ends of eachof the bars 18 have pivotally secured thereto one end of a link 21, as indicated at .22. The opposite end of this link is pivotally secured to one of the transverse bars 13 of the seat frame. This provides an offset hinged connection between the seat and back and permits of the latter being adjusted to position the same at either longitudinal edge of the seat and thus re verse the position of its use.
In order to limit the pivotal or hinged movement of the back in either direction, the arms 17 are cut away along one side edge intermediate their ends to provide opposite stop shoulders 24 and the bars 18 of the back operate within this cut out portion so as to engage these shoulders. In order to reverse the back, the latter is first raised and then moved transversely of the seat 10 until the bars 18 engage the shoulders 24.
The seat is further provided with coming the legs properly spaced apart, provides The combined foot rest and a foot rest. brace is connected to its respective legs through the medium of braces 28. Carried by each of the legs 25 is a hook 29 which is adapted to engage an eye 30, located adjacent the upper end of each of the legs. This serves to hold the legs in extended position. An additional hook 21 which is secured to one of the transverse bars 13, is receivable within an opening 32 provided in each of the braces 27, so thateither of the legs or foot rests, may be held in folded position beneath the seat. 1
Extendingthrough each of the arms 18 near the opposite ends thereof, are eye bolts 33, the said bolts extending downwardly through the ends of the longitudinal bars 12 of the seat frame. These eye bolts provide means of connection with supporting ropes or chains 34, by means of which the swing is suspended. By extending theseeye bolts 33 downward through the arms and bars 12, the swing is firmly suspended, from details of construction and the right is here in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described. the invention what is claimed is A combined bench and swing comprising a seat, a back secured to the seat, means connected to the seat, whereby the swing 10 may be suspended, means whereby the back and brace connecting the legs and means for holding the legs in folded or unfolded position. y
In testimony whereof-I aflix my signature.
