LUBRICATOR.
Application filed January 25, 1923. Y Serial No. 614,999.L
To all wtom t may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, JEROME J. AULL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of whichthe following is a full, clear, Vand exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to sight feed lubricators for internal combustion engines in which the lubricant is contained in a reservoir usually comprising a glass cylinder with metal base and top cover and the oil is delivered by gravity through a sight feed chamber below, with the delivery controlled by a valve in the base with the valve stem extending upwardly through a central valve tube in the reservoir and projecting above the top cover. The filling opening for such lubricators is located in the top cover at one side of the central portion and as such lubrieators are generally subjected to back pressure it is necessary that this filling openf ing shall be properly closed.
lt is the special Object of my invention to provide for this class of lubricators a simple, cheap and effective closure for the filler opening, which will operate automatically to seal the Opening when the usual slide or scutcheon is shifted to cover the opening.
The invention consists of that certain novel construction and arrangement to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed.
ln the drawings. Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved lubricator.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion thereof.
llhe lubricator except for the means for closing the filler opening is of the usual and familiar construction in which 1 is a glass cylinder mounted on a flanged base 2 upon which is screwed the sight feed cage comprising a casing 3 with side windows 4: covered by a small glass cylinder 5. The sight feed chamber is also provided with a baffle device G and below the baille is the usual ball check valve 7.
The reservoir is covered by a flanged cover lwasher 11 is a pla-te 21.
plate 8 which fits down over the glass cylinder 1. Extending up from the central portion'of the base 2f is the tube 9 which pro- `jects through a central opening in the cover, and the portion above the cover is screwthreaded to receive a nut 10 by means of which the` cylinder is securely clamped between the cover and base, a washer 11 being supplied below the nut. Between the nut and washer is a disk 12 which is provided with a spring arm 13 extending upwardly to engage a milled cap piece 111, which is screwed upon the upper end of the tube 9. The valve stem 15 extends up through the tube and is provided at the upper end with the usual snap lever 16 which bears upon the upper face of the cap piece 141- and serves to raise or lower the valve under the tension of the coiled spring 17 on the valve stem. An equalizing pipe 18 connects an opening 19 through the base into the sight feed chamber with the upper endV of the reservoir. above described is of the ordinary kind and forms no part of the present invention which, as stated, relates to the sealing of the feed opening 2O in the top cover.
Mounted loosely on the tube 9 beneath the This plate extends laterally flush with the top surface of the cover plate beyond the feed opening where the plate is enlarged and cut away to provide space for a washer 22 larger than the feed opening` 20, which washer is seated in vthe plate Opening. The outer end of the plate is curved over on itself to form a spring arm 23, which bears upon the washer to hold it tight against the cover, while still permitting the plate to be swung from side to side with the curved-over portion serving as a handle as well as a spring arm.
An effective seal for the feed opening 2O is thus obtained at very slight expense and without the necessity of providing any screwthreaded cap for the opening or designing any other sealing device which has to be manually operated. A stop 24 is pron vided on the cover against which the arm is shifted to close the feed opening, with the spring arm 23 holding the washer 22 and the washer carried by the plate 21. There is also no liability of the scutcheon plate be` All of the construction coming loose and accidentally opening while in use.
Having thus described my invention, Wha! I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Inrcolnbination with a lubrieatoi having z lubricant reservoir and an openingrfor Supplying; lubricant to the reservoir, a plate rotatably mounted on the lubricatoi'., said plate having an aperture adapted to register with 10 said opening, a Washer in said aperture, the outer portion of said plate bent over on itseit' to act as a handle and the' extreme end of said bent over portion bearing against the Washer to urge the latter against the Wall of the lubiieatoi' to seal said filling o eninv. y Y
