Description

B. J. CHILTON. SANITARY FLUSHING APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV.17, 1910.
1,038,294. Patented Sept. 10,1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN JOHN CHILTON, 0F KURIPU'NI, MASTERTON, NEW ZEALAND, ASSIGNOR TO CHILTON FLUSI-IER COMPANYLIMITED, OF'AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, A CORPO- RATION OF NEW ZEALAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
Application filed November 17, 1910. Serial No. 592,885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN JOHN CHIL- TON, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and resident of Kuripuni, Masterton, in the Provincial District of Wellington, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Flushing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to apparatus for flushing water closets and the like.
According hereto, a ball valve within a casing in the down pipe, is raised from its seat by a lever and the contents of a flushing cistern discharged. The ball is kept off its seat by the pressure of the flowing water upon a wing plate which has an arm in contact with the ball. The cistern is closed at the top and the supply of water thereto, beyond a predetermined quantity, is prevented by a float which closes an air valve. Noise is prevented by a cap operated by a ball float and arranged to close the downpipe before air can obtain admission thereto.
My invention is illustrated in the drawing wherein:-
Figure 1, is a vertical sectional View through an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2, a similar view taken on a plane substantially at right angles to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a plan View. Fig. 1, is a sectional elevation of the cistern and parts.
Referring to the drawings, the ball 1 normally rests upon the valve seat 2 and closes a passage 3 in the casing a which is located in the downpipe 5. A crank arm 6 adapted to lift the ball from its seat is fixed upon a spindle 7 which passes through a stufling box 8 and is journaled in the casing. A wing plate 9 pivoted to a bracket 10 is integrally formed with a curved arm 11 the end of which rests upon the ball.
Upon the spindle 7 being partially rotated by a hand piece 12 the ball is lifted from its seat by the arm 6 into a recess 13 and is maintained therein (so long as water is flowing through the downpipe) by the arm 11 which is held against the ball by the pressure of water upon the wingplate.
A by-pass aperture 14: is closed by a valve 15 which is guided by a slide 16 working in a cylinder 17. A coiled spring 18 is interposed between the guide and a cap 19 screwed upon the end of the cylinder. An eccentric cam 20 fixed upon spindle 7 engages a projection 21 from the valve when the spindle is partially rotated and lifts the valve from its seat. In order to reduce pressure upon the ball 1 and thereby facilitate its opening the Valve 15 is lifted by the cam before the crank arm 6 contacts with the ball.
Referring now to Fig. 4, the cistern 22 is connected to a supply pipe 23 and has a closed top 24 in which is an air valve 25 closable by a float 26. When water in the cistern has risen to a certain height the air valve closes and shortly thereafter pressure of air, prevents further ingress: of water. The passage through the supply pipe is restricted so that when the bypass valve referred to is opened the water falls below its normal level, the air valve opens and pressure in the cistern is reduced. Upon the top of the downpipe 5 slides a cover cap 27 operated by the lever 28 pivoted at the end 29 and having a ball float 30 at the other. When suflicient water has passed out of the cistern the ball float falls, the cap slides upon the downpipe, and covers a number of holes 31, thereby closing the downpipe before noise can be caused by air rushing into it.
hat I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a flushing apparatus, the combination of a casing or conduit, a valve normally closing the passage through the casing, a by-pass for conducting water about said valve, a supplemental valve normally closing the by-pass, a spindle provided with radially projecting means adapted to successively move said supplemental and main valves from their seats as it is rotated, and means for turning the spindle.
2. In a flushing apparatus, the combination of a casing or conduit, a valve normally closing the passage through the casin a by-pass for conducting water about 237 said Valve, a supplemental valve normally closing the by-pass, a spindle, a cam on the In testimony whereby I have'aflixed my spindle adapted to move the supplemental signature in presence of two Witnesses. valve from its seat as the spindle rotates, an
arm connected With the spindle and adapted 4 v EDWIN JOHN CHILTON. to open the main valve following the opening of the supplemental valve as the spin- Witnesses:
dle rotates, and means for turning the ARTHUR LEWITT FERNEYHoUeI-I,
spindle. JOHN WILLIAM JONES.
