NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH D. BINGHAM, OF MAUMEE CITY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGUE-RINGS FOR NECK-YOKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,018, dated December 22,1874; application filed November 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SETH D. BINGHAM, of Maumee City, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in TongueRing for Neck- Yokes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved device, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail section taken through the line 00 00 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved. ring for neck-yokes, to receive and support the tongue of the vehicle, which shall be so constructed that it may be applied to any neck-yoke, and which cannot stretch or tear away.
The invention consists in an improved tongue-ring for neck-yokes formed of the leather covers and the metal plate, in substantially the manner hereinafter describedthat is to say, with the upper ends of the plate and of one part of the cover left free to be passed around the neck-yoke and secured by rivets, as set forth.
The cover or outside part of the ring is made of leather, in two parts, A B. Through the center of the part A, and through the lower part of the part B, is formed the hole through which the end of the tongue is passed. The upper part of the part B is extended so as to pass around the neck-yoke and overlap the upper part of the part A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. G is the inner part of thering, which is made of metal, and the lower part of which is made of such a size that it may be placed betweenthe part A of the cover and the lower part of the part B, and allow the outer and inner edges of the said leather cover to be stretched together along the outer and inner edges of said metal plate, as indicated in Fig. l. The upper part of the metal plate 0 is extended so as to pass around the neck-yoke and overlap the upper ends of the part A of the cover. The free ends of the part B of the cover, and of the metal plate 0, are secured by two or more rivets, D, which are passed through them and through the upper end of the part A, and through the bodies of the part B andthe metal plate 0. The forward ends of the rivets D may be passed through holes in a plate or long washer, E, upon which they are headed down. The lower part of the metal plate 0 may be strengthened by being made double, the lower part of the'smaller plate being kept in place by lips formed upon the edges of the larger plate, as
shown in Fig. 1.
By this construction the rings maybe made and applied to any neck-yoke, by passing the upper ends of the cover B and plate 0 around said neck-yoke, and'securing it by the rivets.
I do not desire to claim, broadly, the combination of metal and leather in the holdback of a neck-yoke, as this is not new with myself.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tongue-ring for neck-yokes, formed of the combined leather covers A B, and the metal plate 0, with the upper ends of the plate 0 and the part B of the cover left free to be passed around the neck-yoke and secured by rivets D, as set forth.
SETH D. BINGHAM.
