Be it known that 1, ERNEST BmsTowLE MARE, a British subject, anti resident of Merle-Yfood, KiInLane,- St. Helene, in England, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Production of Continuous Strips of Glass amt Apperatu's'Therefor', of which the to} lowmg 18 a specification.
This invention relates to pi'oeesses and glppsz'at'us for yrodueieg a continuous strip of glass by rolhng molten glass issuing from a tank, anti has for its object an .im roved process snct' improved apparatus w erehy the strip produced is fiat and free from defects. v
A continuous strip of glass has heretofore produced h forming a pool ofmolten metal on a travel ing table constituting one mem he of a1 roiling ap aratus, the pool having the characteristic t at it is unconfined except by theiother member of the rolling apparatus, that is to say, that; it is unconfined laterally and int the beckand upwardly (save imsor near the pass of the rolling apparatus) The 001 havmg this characteristic is formedby lowing a stream of. glass tofall from a spout on to the travellin table, whereby the glass spreads in a has ward direction forming a, heel behind the stream. Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Process of producing a continuous strip of glass consisting in forming a pool of molten metal leading to a pass which forms the strip, the passdiinensions being substantially-equal to the thickness of the strip and greater than the width of the strip, characterized by the pool being unconfined in respect to its edges up to and throu h the pass, but confined in respect to its bac end.
2. Process of producing a continuous strip of glass consisting in forming a 001 of molten metal leading to aipass whic forms the strip, the pass dimensions being substantially-equal to the thickness of the strip and greater than the width characterized-by the pool hein unconfined in respect to its edges up to t confined'in respect to its back end.
3. Process of producin a continuous strip of glass consisting in iorming a pool of molten metal leading to a pass which forms the strip, the pass dimensions being substantially equal to the thickness of the strip and greaterthan the width of the stri characterized by the poolbeing unconfine through its back 4. In apparatus for producing a continuous strip of glass, the combination of a miing apparatus havingpass dimensions substantially equal to the thickness of the strip and greater than the width of the strip, and
a conduit leading a stream of glass to the rolling apparatus, adapted to form on the lower member of the rolling apparatus a pool of glass which is unconfined in respect to its edgesup to the pass and means adapted to confine the back end of the pool. 5. In apparatus for producing a continu ous strip of glass, the combination of a rolling apparatus having pass dimensions substantielly equal to the thickness of the strip and greater than the width of the strip, and a conduit leading a stream or" glass to the' rolling apparatus, the conduit being located with its mouth close to the lower member of the rolling apparatus and sufficiently upper member thereof to permit the formation on the lower member of a pool ofglass which is unconfined'in respect to its edges to the pass, and is con fined with rpspcct to its back end by the conduit.
6. The process of producing a continuous strip of iglass, which consists in feeding the molten g ass to a forming; pass and permit ting said glass before entering the pass, to form a laterally spreading pool unconfined of the strip,

In apparatus for producing a continuous strip of glass, the combination with a travelling table and a. roller forming with the table a rolling apparatus having between said table and rollerpass dimensions substantially equal to the thickness of the strip and greater than the width of the strip, of a conduit leading a stream of glass to the rolling apparatus, the conduit bein located with its mouth close to the travelhngtable and sufliciently distant from the roller to permit the formation on the table of a pool of glass which. is unconfined in respect to its edges up to-the pass, and is confined with its back end by the conduit.
