Abstract

497,806. Dies ; perforating vitreous material. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WALTER, D. O. Aug. 5, 1937, No. 21629. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXII] A die, for use in forming holes in a thin sheet, is made by heating a capillary tube 1 of vitreous material until its walls collapse at one point into a continuous mass 3, and the bore 2 tapers to a fine channel 6 that ends in the mass 3, and then grinding or lapping away the mass 3 to produce a smooth surface in the plane 7 in which the fine channel 6 is exposed. Silica is a suitable material for the tube 1, but glass may be used. A punch for co-operating with the die is preferably made by the process described in Specification 492,556, [Group XXII]. The device is especially suitable for forming scanning-holes in a Nipkow disc for transmitting television. According to the Provisional Specification the dies may be used for wire drawing and for squirting viscous solutions.
