IMPROVEMENT IN BIRD-CAGES.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,762, dated December 15, 1874; application filed July 6, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS P. REICHERT, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a Bird-Cage, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the peculiar construction of the supporting device for the food-cups of a birdcage, whereby the same are held in their proper positions 5 and it consists in the arrangement, with the horizontal band of a bird-cage, of the movable supporting-loop D, having its fulcruin within the eye C of the bracket O, attached to the inner side of the said band, and resting upon the upper edge of the same, the loop D being arranged in such a manner that two of their proper vertical or horizontal position.

The loop D, having its fulcrum at O', is movable vertically within the socket O from a horizontal to an almost upright position, while its declining from a horizontal position is prevented by the horizontal band A, upon which the said loop D is resting.

The object of thusmaking the loop D movable is to facilitate the nesting of a number of cages of successively smaller sizes into each other, thereby materially reducing their bulk, and adding to their safety in shipping.

In order to enable any one skilled in the arts to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I shall proceed to describer its construction andV operation, having reference to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and illustrating my invention more fully. p

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of part of a birdcage, showing my invention in perspective. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the food-cup in its proper position. Fig. 3 is a top view of the saine, and Figs. 4 and 5 detail views of the band A.

Similar parts are marked with corresponding letters of reference.

A is the middle one of the horizontal bands of a bird-cage, consisting of ametallic strip, provided with suitable fastenings B for the vertical wires E, arranged at suitable distances apart. O is a bracket fastened to the inner side of band A, and provided with the socket C', forming a bearing for the supporting-loop D. D is the supporting-loop. It is a rectangular wire frame, as shown, constructed of a single piece of wire, its two ends revolving within the socket C', and its two parallel sides at right angles with the ends, slightly impinging against two of the vertical wires E, and resting upon the upper edge of band A. F is the food-cup, made of suitable material and shape. It is surrounded at suitable place by a projection or bead, to prevent its falling through the loop D.

By arranging the loop D in a manner as described, the socket O will act as its fulcrum, and the distance between the socket O and the band A the short arm of a lever, thus allowing only an upward motion of the loop D, and strongly supporting the foodcup F. The loop D, having two of its parallel sides slightly impinging against two of the vertical wires E, is prevented from moving laterally, and thereby the food-cup F is held in its proper position, which cannot be done to such a degree of exactness with any other device now in use, and which is a great desideratum in bird-cages, nothing spoiling the neat appearance of an otherwise well finished birdcage more than the displaced and badlyhanging food-cups. l

Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination with the cross-band A, the bracket O and loop D, hinged to said bracket, and resting upon the band A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
