IMPROVEMENT IN IOLDING BASKET.
tithe tlgemle raamt in in tigen tettets ntent 2mn mating gaat ni tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. M. OLDS, ot' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Folding Basket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. In said drawings- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my folding basket when adjusted for use.
Figure 2 is a view of the bottom of the same disconnected.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.'
This invention consists in so constructing a basket that it may readily be folded compactly, when not in use, as may be desired.
In said drawings, A may represent horizontal slats, the ends of which being connected together by means` of Wires B, passing through them, serving for hinges when adjustments are made.` Angles are formed in said wires at requisite points for holding the bottom pieces G- C, passing through the same, near their outer edges. These two bottom pieces are made a little wider than the space to be occupied, so that when their inner edges are brought together inside, they will support the contents of" the basket, one edge being grooved to prevent a 'se aration if the ressure should not be uniform see fin. 2. A hook or brace, D, is ivoted to one of the slats P P n P so that when the basket is adjusted for use, it may be attached to another side of the basketin a diagonal direction, and hold it rigidly in its position. The slats are made uniform, or nearly so, in width, so that each side will fold into the spaces opposite compactly. At the lower corners of the basket, short pieces or sections, E, are secured, so as toA allow room for the bottom to fold together with the sides, 'said bottom pieces being heid in a. folded position bya pin, F, pressing into the opposite piece. The ends of the wires .B being bent over or riveted at the upper corners of the basket, secure all of the parts togetheijmakng a cheap and compact article for general use, which itis believed will be universal, both as a basket and aberry-crate. The sides of the basket may be constructed so as tostandin a. vertical position, or any angle desired, or the bottom muy be constructed of a single piece, and arranged so as to be detached before folding. Said bars or slats represented by A, may be constructed of sheet metal or wire, and looped around the corner wires, or otherwise be attached, so as to form the hinge referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is
1. As an improvement in the art of constructing baskets, boxes, or crates, forming the sides of a series of slats or bars, united at the corners by means of a wire or rod passing through them, and pivoting the same together, so as to permit the article to be folded, substantially as described.
2. I claim also the folding bottom, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
A. M. OLDS.
