SOFA-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29 1919.
Application filed February 3, 1917. Serial No. 146,404.
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, HENRY HARTUNG, a
citizen of the United States, residing at "the providing of means of locking the frame thereof in open position.
A further object of my improvement is the providing in a sofa bed of the character described, means of counter weighting the moving parts.
And a further object of my improvement is the providing of means of utilizing the back as a foot in the open position of a sofa bed.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, .as herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings of the herein described embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my improved sofa bed, open ready to receive the mattress. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the sofa bed taken through A B of Fig. 1, when the bed is in a closed position. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the sofa bed taken through A B of Fig. 1, when the bed is in a closing position, showing particularly the joints of the mattress frame, and Fig. 4: is a sectional View of the sofa bed taken through A B of Fig. 1 in the open position as shown in said figure.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is a base. 2 is the seat. 3 is the back. i are the arms. 5 is the rear section of the mattress'frame. 6 is the intermediate sec tion of the mattress frame. 7 is the front section of the mattress frame. 8 is the fabric in the mattress frame.
9 is a pivot support secured to arms 4 to which is secured pivot 10. 11 is a slotted plate in which operates pivot 10 and which is secured to rear section 5 of the mattress frame.
On seat 2 is a member 12 to which is pivotally mounted intermediate section 6 of the mattress frame at 13 and at 14 forms a support, and locking device for the said intermediate section preventing the mattress frame from folding when the bed is in open position.
15 is a guide member secured to seat 2 in which the front section 7 of the mattress frame slides and oscillates.
The mattress frame sections 5, 6 and 7 are pivoted together at 16 and 17,, preferably on the edge of the mattress frame, thus at a distance from the fabric, and to permit of the folding of the mattress and bedding within the mattress frame and its fabric when in position.
18 is a brace for intermediate section 6. 19 is the hinge, operatively connecting seat 2 and base 1. 20 is a counter balance spring or means of counterbalancing the moving parts, secured to member 12 at one end, and as shown in the drawings, a spring secured to base 1, to counter balance the weight of seat 2 and back 3 in the operation of opening and closing.
lows.
Starting in the open position as shown in Fig. 1, with the mattress and bedding omitted, raising back 3 causes the mattress frame to first break at 16 and slot 11 to slide and turn on pivot 10, then to break at 17 and intermediate section turns on pivot 13 looking member 14 giving away to allow this movement and then front section 7 oscillates and slides in guide member 15 until seat 2 is in closed position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pattent is:
A sofa bed comprising a frame, a seat The operation of my invention is as foland back pivotally mounted to said frame,
10 the bed is in open position, and means of permitting the other sections of the mattress frame to adjust themselves with reference tothe main frame'and seat in opening and closing and cooperating With said locking device in holding them secure at the limits 15 of movement.
