IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-LEACHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,020, dated November 17, 1874 application filed July 24, 1874.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID J. MOFFITT, of Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ash-Leaches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my leach, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same in a tilted position.

Corresponding letters are used to denote like parts in the two ligures.

This invention relates to a certain improvement in that class of devices known as ashleaches; and it consists of a hopper or conically shaped vessel, to one side of which is fastened an axis, having its bearings in eyes or staples inserted into a supporting-frame of such construction as to retain the hopper in place when tilted, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth. v

B refers to a hopper or conically shaped vessel, for holding ashes from which it is intended to make lye, supported upon the frame A by means of the axis b and strip b1, fastened, respectively, to its sides, and having their projecting ends resting upon the two upper side rails or pieces of the frame. The axis bis conned to its bearings upon the frame by means of staples or other suitable means driven into the latter-mentioned rails. To give the hopper the .proper inclination, and retain it to its proper place when tilted for emptying its con tents or the refuse ashes, is the object of the rail c3, (above alluded to,) entering and suitably fastened to the front upright-s or legs a a, ot' the frame at or about midway their lengths. At the tapering end or bottom of the hopper is an opening, extending the whole width thereof, and covered from the outside by a metallic plate, b2, so secured to the hopper as to expose the ends ofthe said opening, and allow the lye to escape from the hopper, after which it may be caught by a suitable vessel placed below the hopper.

For convenience in tilting the hopper a handle or lever, C, is adjusted to the same.

I am aware that a revolving hopper, having its axis resting upon uprights, to one of which it is connected by a hook and staples to retain it stationary while being filled, is not new; but

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The hopper B, in combination with the supporting-frame A, having the rail a3, for retaining the hopper in place, and giving it the proper inclination when tilted for emptying its contents or the refuse ashes, substantially as shown and described.
