Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM C. 'Knivnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Curtain Rods, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to curtain rods of the laterally flanged type and to brackets adapted for supporting the same.

An object of my invention is to insure a firm and secure interengagement of the parts without involving difficulty in voluntarily removing the rod.

Other objects of invention are inexpensiveness, strength and simplicity.

Invention consists in the means for carrying out the above recited objects as hereinafter claimed.

In the embodiment of my invention herein illustrated 6, 6 represent the sections of a telescoping curtain rod of the flange type provided with end portions 7 disposed at right angles to the body 8 of the rod with which the end portions are connected by bent or curved portions 9.

The entire rod is provided throughout its length with lateral, transversely U shaped flanges 11 integral with a transversely flat central body portion 12. The flanges 11 along the arched portions 9 are bent for wardly so that their edges abut against the body portions 12 forming bent in portions 16. Near each end of the rod, centrally of the body 12, is an indentation forming an inwardly directed rounded projection 1 Each support or bracket 18 is cut and bent by suitable tools from a sheet metal blank and comprises, as shown in Figure 4, an oblong vertically disposed attaching plate 19 provided with perforations 20 near its ends to accommodate attaching screws Midway the length of the attaching plate is a flat lug 22 integral with one edge of the plate and disposed in a plane at right angles to that of the latter. Intermediate the length of the arm or lug 22 is a transversely disposed shoulder 24, V shaped in cross section. The outer extremity 25 of the lug is preferably somewhat rounded or curved.

In mounting the rod 8, each bracket arm 22 enters the spaces between the flanges 11 and the body 12 and in passing the shoulder 24 strikes the projection 17, which is in its path, and causes thebody portion 12 of the rod to yield sufficiently to permit the apex of the shoulder 24 to pass beyond the apex of the projection 17, and one of the inclined sides of the shoulder bears against the side of the projection. Each member 19 is maiin tained in position by means of theattaching screws 21 which are fixed in the window or door casing. If and when the material of the arm 22 is sufficiently thin it will be understood that it will yield during the passage of the shoulder 24 by the projection 17. The inclined sides of the shoulder 24: not only assist in the induction of the member 22 into the rod, but also facilitates the withdrawal of the rod when substantial manual force is exerted upon the latter. By extension of the shoulder completely across the lug, the labor and expense of manufacture otherwise involved in more specifically locating the shoulder relatively to the projection 17, is lessened.

I claim 1. The combination of a curtain rod comprising a fiat 'body and lateral inturned flanges oppositely disposed on the inner face thereof, an inwardly directed projection upon the body, an attaching plate, a flat lateral'lug upon the plate disposed at right angles thereto slidably engaged in the flanges, and a transversely disposed shoulder upon an intermediate portion of the lug adapted to engage the projection.

The combination of a curtain rod comprising a flat body, inturned lateral flanges upon the body, an attaching plate, a lug on v the plate slidable in the flanges, a trans versely disposed shoulder on an intermediate portion of the lug substantially V shaped in cross section, and an inwardly directed projection on the body in the path of the last mentioned shoulden I 8. A curtain rod composed of telescopic sections each with a bend at one end, said sections each being;- provided with a flange 10 bent forwardly with the edge thereof abutting' the bent portion at such bend, and an attachingplateengageable in the "end of each section and having a shoulder extended substantially cntirely'across' the plate; each section having at the en'd'='adjacent said bend an inwardly extending projection for engagement with said transverse shoulder.
