Description
W. C. KENNEY Dec. 15, 1925- CURTAIN R0 D Filed May 13, 1925 Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM C. KENNEY, 0F CRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND,
FACTURING COMEANY, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
PATENT OFFICE.
assrenon 'ro KENNEY MANU- CURTAIN ROD.
Application filed May 13 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. KENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain Rods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sectional channel shaped tubular curtain rods, having difl'erent diameters, of the type employing an i11- terengaging telescopic coupling member.
Heretofore in this type of curtain rod the construction was such as to require the use of independent oval washers to lock or retain the coupling member in engagement with one end section of the rod while applying the curtain to said end section and coupling member, prior to attaching the other end section to the wall bracket. In merchandising the rods it was necessary that these washers be separately shipped and supplied, and involved in addition to the extra expense, the additional labor of applying the same.
The essential objects of my invention are to eliminate the necessity of any separate locking members and attain the desired effeet by a self contained construction, as well as to attain these ends in a simple and easily manipulated structure.
To the above ends primarily my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curtain rod or support embodying my invention,
Figure 2, a fragmentary rear elevation of the central portion of the support, showing the upper flange partially in longitudinal section, and
Figure 3, a rear perspective view of the coupling member with an intermediate portion broken away,
In the drawings 5 represents one end or attaching section of the channel shaped cross section comprising the vertical strip or body 6 and longitudinally disposed inturned edge or lateral flanges 7. The section has 1925. Serial No. 29,944.
the usual intermediate bend 8 to form the rearwardly directed portion 9 for interengagement with a supporting bracket. A companion end section 12 of like construction comprises a body 13, flange 14 and bend 15 to form the attaching portion 16 of this section. The diameter of the member 5 is preferably sufliciently greater than that of the member 12 as to permit a telescopic interengagement of these two parts, if necessary. The flanges 7 integrally with thebody from thin sheet metal have a slight degree of resiliency.
A telescopic coupling member 20 for use with the two above described tubular end members is provided. In detail the coupling member is tubular or of channel shape, comprising in a single integral piece of bent sheet metal a vertical central strip or body portion 22 with inturned longitudinally disposed resilient flanges 23. The major portion of the length of the member 20, indicated at 25, is of uniform width or diameter so as to be a sliding fit over the end of the member 12. Adjacent its other end the member 20, as indicated by 26, is of gradually lessened width forming opposite longitudinal shoulders 28. In this instance the portions of the flanges 23 bounding the area indicated by 26 are preferably, but not necessarily, slightly tapered or inclined towards the plane of the body 22. The second end portion of member 20, indicated generally by 30, may be longitudinally slightly tapering, but in this instance is of uniform width. This portion loosely telescopes in the member 5, and a great part of the shoulders 28 are embraced by the latter. The longitudinally inclined shoulders 28 as they enter the section 5 gradually tighten until the members 5 and 20 become rigidly interlocked.
I claim 1. A sectional curtain rod comprising two end members of channel shape cross section having inturned lateral flanges, and formed for telescopic engagement with each other, and a coupling member of similar cross section comprising end portions formed for and 14 being formed telescopic engagement with the end mem- 2. A sectional curtain rod comprising two end members of channel shape in cross section having inclined lateral flanges, and a coupling member of similar cross section with its major portion of uniform maximum width and having an end portion formed of gradually lessened Width forming opposite longitudinal tapered resilient portions frictionally, Wedgingly and resiliently retained Within the flanges of the end members. 10
In testimony whereof I have afiixed signature.
WILLIAM C. KENNEY.
