Description

C. HFFM'ANN'.
Gas-Burners.
y N0,157 602, I Patented De'c. 8,187.4,
Wmwvpmvp. l XW@ @www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OAEL HOFFMANN, OF NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. l 57,602, dated December 8, 1874; application filed March 28, 1873.
Va cap, tube, or thimble having one or more dischargingoritices at its top is made to fit on an ordinary gas-burner, so as to form a gas expansion-chainber between the eduction-oriiee of said burner and that ofthe cap or thimi ble. My improvement consists in combining,
with the gas expansion-chamber formed between the eduction-orices of the burner and the cap, a secondary expansion chamber formed beneath and around the tip of the burner, so as to obtain a steady Haine with a changing pressure of the gas.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical central section of my burner. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of a modification thereof, Fig. 4, a side view of the same.
VSimilar letters indicate like parts in all the 'gures In the drawing, the letter A designates a common. burner, Which is furnished with a tip, a. With this burner is combined a cap, B, which contains a burner-tip, b, so as to form a gas expansionchaniber, c, between the orifices of the tips a and b. Beneath and around the sides of the tip c is formed a secondary gas-chamber, d, so that when the pressure of the gas is suddenly changed the gas, on reaching the burner A, will be enabled to expand to a certain degree before it passes up through the tip a, and before it reaches the main expansion-chamber c, and thereby the ame is relieved from all inuence of any change in the pressure of the gas, and a steady ame is insured. The cap B shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with an external screwthread, e, for the purpose of attachin g thereto the holder of a lamp-shade or of a chimney.. The cap B shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is plain and slightly tapering on its outer surface, so that the ring of a shade-holder can be slipped over it.
What I claim is- In a check gas-burner constructed with two tips, the combination of a secondary gas eX- pansion-chamber, d, formed around and beneath the tip a, with the main expansion-chamber c, formed between the tip b of the cap B and the tip a of the burner A, all constructed and operated substantially as shown and described.
