Description

S. G.= DARE. `Arganll Gas-Burne'rs.
Patented Dec. 22,1874.
messes.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcF SAMUEL Gr. DARE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARGAND GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,044, dated December 22, 1874; application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL G. DARE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented certain Improvements in Argand Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in the combination, with the body or inner shell of an Arg-and gasburner and forked gas conduits or branch pipes extending to the'sanie, of an adjustable outer shell forming or inclosing a gas-chamber around suoli body or inner shell, and having a conical valve which extends at or nearly at right angles across the ends of the aforesaid forked gas-conduits, whereby it checks the entry of the gas to the gas-chamber, and
avoids the whistling, whichis such a source of annoyance in the ordinary Argand burners, and also forms a very efficient regulator to regulate the flame. The invention also consists in the combination, with the inner and outer shells forming the gas-chamber of the burner, of a collar or flange attached to one or other of the shells, and notched in its opposite edge, or perforated throughout its extent, whereby a simple and efficient distributer is formed, which insures the flame being uniform at all points of the circumference of the burner.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a central vertical section of a burner made with my improvements, the section extending down to the upper part of its socket only, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same,
Ytaken on the plane of the dotted line m zr, Fig. l.
A is the body or inner shell of the burner, such body having in this instance an externally screw-threaded straight portion, a', at the base, and immediately above it a conical portion, d, to which extend at or nearly at right angles two branch pipes or forked gasconduits, B B, from a socket, O, which screws on the gasalier or other gas fixture, on which the burner is to be used. D is the outer shell, which has, in this case, an internally screwthreaded band or portion, b, at its base to fit the screw-threaded portion a on the shell or body A, and immediately above such portion or band a contracted conical portion, c, which coincides in its conical incline with the portion d ofthe shell A, and therefore extendsacross the open ends of the gas-conduits B B at or very nearly at right angles, wherefore it checks the issue of gas therefrom and obviates the whistlin g so prevalent and so annoying in Argand burners. The shell D, thus made and applied to the body A of the burner, is capable of adjustment up or down, and its conical portion c thus forms a regulator or valve, which lmay be adjusted farther from or nearer to the ends ofthe gas-conduits B B, to regulate the issue of gas therefrom and the extent of the flame. The upper end of the shell D is turned inward, (see Fig. 1,) and the gas issues between it and the top of the body Afwherefore the escape of gas from the burner is incidentally regulated at this point, while its issue from the conduit B B is regulated by the valve or portion O of the said shell D. Be-
tween the shell D and the shell or body A th ere is a distributer, j', which consists of a ange on the interior of the shell D, or a collar on the exterior of the shell or body A, preferably the latter, and is perforated or notched so that the gas is checked in its iiow outward and distributed evenly at all points of the burner, and a steady and uniform flame is insured.
The valve c instead of being strictly conical in form may have its axial prole more or less curved.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe combination in an Argand gas-burner of the adjustable shell D, having a screwthread, b, contracted conical valve-seat c, and distributing-dange f, with the bod y A, having the conduits B and conical inclined portion d, said inclined conical portion being perforated, and all constructed to operate as and for lthe purpose set forth.
SAMUELWG. DARE.
