AIR-REGULATING DEVICE FOR ATMOSPHERIC GAS- BURNERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES N. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at I/Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Regulating Devices for Atmospheric Gas-Burners, (Case A;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to atmospheric gasburners generally, but is especially adapted to burners for incandescentillumination, and has for its object to provide a novel regulating device or shutter for not only controlling the admission of air to the Bunsen tube, but which shall also provide that all air entering the regulator is deflected downward from said regulator and caused to pass under a depending wall before passing into the Bunsen tube, the depending wall serving as a guard for the air-openings in the Bunsen tube and preventing any fluctuation or disturbance in the air as it passes the regulator from affecting the current of air passing into the Bunsen tube.v
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation, on an enlarged scale, of an atmospheric burner embodying my novel invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section corresponding therewith, the Bunsen tube and upper portion of the mixing-chamber being in elevation.
A denotes the base or thimble, which is adapted for attachment to a gas-fixture or other source of supply and is shown as provided with a rib or flange 1, and B an atmospheric gas or Bunsen tube having the usual air-inlets 2. C denotes the burner; D, the mixing-chamber; E, the chimney-gallery; F, the burner-skirt, and G a burner-tube by which said parts are carried and which slides over the Bunsen tube, the latter terminating in the mixing-chamber, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. These parts may all be of any ordinary or preferred construction, the features of novelty of the present device being embodied in the air-chamber, or, as it is commonly termed, air regulator or shutter,

This air-chamber comprises an outer shell 3, whichdepends from the burnertube and is provided withair-openings 4, and an inner shell 5, which fits closely within shell 3, but may be turned freely therein. The base of inner shello is provided with a central opening 6, through which the Bunsen tube passes, leaving said inner shell to rest upon rib 1.- Inner shell 5 is provided with air-openings 7, which are adapted to register with openings 4 in the outer shell, and is also provided with a rib or flange 8, by which it may be turned to cause openings 7 to either partly or wholly register with openings 4: in the outer shell or to wholly close the openings in the outer shell by causing the solid metal between the openings in the inner shell to register with the openings in the outer shell,
as will be clearly understood from the drawings. Within the air-chamberis a depending wall 9, which is imperforate and extends down as far as the bottom of openings 3 and 7 so that air entering the chamber through the openings 4 and 7 must pass under this depending wall before it can pass into air-openings 2 in the Bunsen tube, thus neutralizing the effect of any eddies in the current formed by said openings and equalizing any differences in the currents from different openings.
The special mode of assembling the parts and securing certain of them together is not of the essence of my invention. In the present instance I have shown burner-tube G as provided with a rib or flange 10 and the burner* skirt, outer shell, and depending wall 9 as provided with central openings 11, which just receive the burner-tube. In assembling the lower end of the burner tube is passed through the openings 11 in these parts, the burner-skirt resting against rib l0, and the lower end of the tube is flanged or turned outward upon the inner side of depending wall 9, as at 12, thereby locking these parts together and to the burner-tube.
In use the operator regulates the supply of air that can enter the Bunsen tube by turning the inner shell by means of rib or flange 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. An air-regulator for atmospheric gasburners consisting of an outer shell having openings, an inner shell having corresponding openings, one of said shells being rotatable relatively to the other so that the openings may be part-1y or Wholly closed and a depending wall within the inner shell which extends downward as far as the openings and under which the incoming air passes, substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a base, a Bunsen tube secured to the base, and a burnertube adapted to pass over the Bunsen tube, of an outer shell, having openings, and a depending wall 9 which are secured to the burnertube and an inner shell having a central opening through which the Bunsen tube passes and which is adapted to rest upon the base and is provided with openings adapted to register with the openings in the outer shell, the depending wall 9 being located inside of said outer and inner shells.
3. The combination with the thimble A having rib 1, of the Bunsen tube B having air-inlets 2, the burner-tube G fitted to slide over the tube B and having the cylindrical outer shell 3 provided with openings at depending from it, the inner cylindrical shell 5 having openings 7 and resting on the rib 1 of the thimble, and the cylindrical imperforate wall 9 supported by the tube G and depending substantially midway between the tube B and the shells 3, 5, to a point below the air-inlets 2 in said tube.
4. The combination with the thimble Ahaving rib 1, of the Bunsen tube B having air-inlets 2, the burner-tube G fitted to slide over the tubeB and having rib 10 and flange 12, the outer cylindrical shell 3 having openings 4, the inner cylindrical shell 5 having openin gs 7 and resting on rib 1 of the thimble, and the cylindrical imperforate Wall 9 depending substantially midway between the tube B and the shells 3, 5, to a point below the air-inlets 2 in said tube, the said outer shell 3 and the wall 9 being secured to the tube G between the said rib 10 and flange 12.
