Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SCHMIDT', a citizen of the United States, residing at Vjandotte, county of lVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Pistols, and declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the saine, reference being Y had to' the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to pistols and an object of 'my improvements is to provide a simplified and improved retracting and releasing mechanism, and one especially adapted to toy pistols.
I accomplish'this purpose in the device illustrated iu the accompanying drawings, iii which- Figure l, is a sectional elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention.
Figure 2, is a partial View similar to Figure 1 showing the mechanism in a'diifeient position.
Figure 3, is a section on the line III-III of Figure 1.
Figure 4, is a perspective view of the reti'acting lever.
Figure 5, is a perspective view of the trigger piece.
a, is the stock forming a casing for the 'actuating mechanism. This casing is made of sheet metal in t'wo corresponding halves that are placed together in the usual way to form the stock. vThe part of the casing toward the observer is removed in Figures 1 and 2.
c, is the barrel; d, is a piston adapted to reciprocate in the barrel c. e, is a compression spring adapted to throw the piston d forward to compress the air and actuate the projectile. g, is the retracting rod, the forward end of which is' secured at the center of the piston d and which extends through the coil spring e and into the cavity toward the rear of the stock. g2, is a slotformed through the rear end of the rod d.
h, is the trigger piece pivoted upon a pin h2 bearing in the stock or casing a and provided with a lug h8 which engages back of the spring e so that said springracts to return the trigger piece to its normal position.
j, is a retracting lever provided with an arm ja which extends upward through the slot gzwand is bent over, as shown at j, Figure 4, to prevent the arm j* from coming out of the slot g2. The lever y' is provided with an arcuate slot j* and through this slot passes the pivot pinvl: which bears in the two walls of the casing or stock a. The' lever j extends iii a projection js ltoward the trigger piece 7i.` and this projection is turned up at its lower edge in a portion which is then again turned to form a gui ing and engaging porti-on j". The retracting lever j is made of sheet metal and -lies against one ofthe interior surfaces a2, (Fig. 3) and the part j6 enga-ges and is adapted to slide along the other interior wall, of the casing as. The left hand edge of theprojection js is turned upward at right angles to form the lug j?.
The trigger piece h is made of sheet metal which extends and is adapted to reciprocate in a slot through the handle of the stock a; the projection h4 extending into said stock and being turned upward along its Iouter edges to form the flange h5.
m, m2, are two branches of a light spring which extends in a coil around'the shank of the pin la, its branch m engaging against the forward edge of the part ji of the retracting lever and the branch m2 engaging against the rear wall of the casing ci.v This spring is always under tension and normally acts to forceV the ret-racting lever j forward so that the rear end of the slot j4 engages the shank of the screw if, as shown in Figure 1.
The opera-tion of the above described device is as follows:
Normally, the parts are inl the position shown in Figure l where the piston d is thrust forward carrying the arm ja of the retracting lever 7' forward and holding said lever in engagement with the rear wall of the slotV g2 and the. shank of the pin c in engagement with the rear wall of the slot 3'4. In this position, the projection h4 from the trigger piece l1, engages under the part j5 of the retracting lever j.
When the trigger lc is drawn backward,
the projection la* actsagainst the part 7'5 the action of the Mlast named figure so that the pin" c is brought into the forward part of the slot i4,
and the projection h4 is permitted thereby to slide past the end of the projection js so that the trigger may return to its normal position. The spring m acting against the retracting lever j now forces said lever back to the position shown in Figure l where it is ready to be again actuated as above described. i l
The lange it? forms a broad Wearing surface upon the retracting lever j and the ange 11.5 forms a broad wearing surface on the projection h4. The part j of the retracting lever engages so as to easily slide forward and backward upon the inner surfaces a3 of the casing a and coacts with the part of said retractmg lever engaging the surface a2 of the casing a so as to form a convenient and durable guiding means for the retracting lever.
What I claim is:--
1. In an apparatus of the kind described,
' the combination of a lever, "a trigger piece adapted to' actua-te said lever, said lever being provided with a slot, a pivot pin for said lever extending through said slot, the said lever and trigger piece being relatively so arranged that the trigger piece shall actuate said lever and pass bv the same in its motion in one direction and shall contact said lever and force it out of the way to allow the return of said trigger piece on its motion in the other direction, said movement-s being permitted by the relative movenie-nt of the. pin in said slot.
2. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a lever, a trigger piece adapted to actuate said lever, said lever being provided with a slot, a pivot pin for said lever extending through said slot, the said lever and trigger piece being relatively so arranged that the trigger piece shall aotuate said lever and pass by the same in its motion in one direction and shall contact said lever and force it out of the way to allow the return of said trigger piece on its motion in the other direction, said movements'being permitted bv the relative movement of the pin in said slot, and a sprin r acting to moveand yieldingly hold sai `lever in its rst named position.
3. In an apparatus of the kind described, a retracting rod, a pivoted lever engaging said rod so as to retract the same on turning in one direction, a slot insaid lever, a pivot pin passing through said slot, a trigger piece adapted to rotate said lever to retract said rod in one position of said lever relative to said pin and to pass by Said lever to return to its initial position when said lever is located at another position relative lto said pivotV pin, means for positioning and yieldingly holding said lever so that said pin shall be located in said slot to form a pivot for said lever when first acted on by said trigger piece, said trigger piece being adapted to pass by said lever at the end of its retracting motion and on its return movement to force said lever to a position at which said pin is located in said.

In an apparatus of the kind described, a lever formed of sheet metal in combination with a casing, said lever being adapted to engage one wall of said casing and slide thereon, said lever being lturned upward at its edge and then over to yform a surface adapted to engage the other wall of said casing.
