COMBINATION SLING SHOT AND BOW Filed April 15, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVZNTQZZ 2220? SC'JZZ verted from a sling shot for shooting pebbles Patented Nov. 11, 1930 EDWIN SGOTT SMITH, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA COMBINATION SLING SHOTAND BOW Application filed April 13 My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined slingshot and bow and has for its object to so construct a device of this character which may be readily conandother small articles into a bow for shooting arrows and when notin use, the arms thereof may be drawn within the hollow handle whereby said arms will be housed, making the device more convenient for carrying by a person and also for transportation.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter 5 set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which l r V Fig." 1, is a face view of my improved devicewiththe arms housed within the casing. Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the arms distended and adjusted to a position, producing a sling shot.
Fig. 3, is a section at the line 3-3 of Fi 2.
Fig. 4, is a view similar to Fig. 1 ta en from the reverse side and illustrating the device when converted into a bow.
Fig. 5, is a top edge view of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6, is a face view of Fig. 4, the face plate being removed to clearly show the 00- action between the arms and the flange for aligning said arms when the latter are in the 7 position in which the device is used as a bow,
. the slide being omitted. V
Fig-7, is a section at the line 7-7 of Fig. 4. Fig. 8, is a detail View of the face of the sliding block. Fig. 9, is a similar view of of the sliding block.
Fig. 10, is an edge view of the sliding block. i
Fig. 11, represents two detail views of one of the arms.
Fig. 12, is a detail view of the face plate looking at its inner surface.
the reverse side permitting the projection 1929. Serial No. 354,8Q0.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 12 represents the handle or holder of the device which is preferably made in two pieces, the body having the flanges 13 formed therewith which produce a recess withinsaid body and a face plate 14 for se curement upon the flanges of the body by means of the rivets 15 or in any other suitable manner. This construction produces asimple, inexpensive hollow handle for the processes hereinafter described. 16 repre sents a ledge which partially closes the u per end of the body, leaving only the spaces 1 for of the arms therethrough in order that said arms may he slid back and forth into and out of the body as occasion requires.
The face plate 14 has a groove 18 formed in its inner surface by outsetting that portion of the metal of said face plate. forming the walls of said groove.
19 represents a slide block adapted to fit within the groove 18 and travel longitudinally thereof and this slide block has a threaded stud or screw 20 projecting therefrom adapted to pass through a slot 21 formed in the outset portion of the face plate so that by threading any suitable form of nut 22 upon said stud, the slide block may be adjusted and held in any position within its groove, and this slide block is provided withthe pivot studs 23 which project into the space within the body passing through the eyes 24 formed upon the inner ends of the arms 17. The slideblock alsohas a lug 20 adapted to slide in the slot 21 asa further guide for this slide block. j Itwill be seen that by the proper movement and adjustment of the slide block, the arms may be either drawn within the hollow body or moved outward until assumingthe position shown in Fig. 2 or moved still fua ther outward until assuming the position shown in Fig. 4. 1 j The outer ends of the arms are so bent as to provide the eyes 25 in which the outerends of the elastic strips 26 are attachedto said arms andto the inner ends of the elastic strips is secured the sling 27. i When the arms are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2, a sling shot is provided which has all the advantages of the ordinary sling shot and when the arms are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 4, a bow is provided which I have found by practice to'be more eiiicient than the same size bow of or'-- dinary construction in that the action of the elastic strips upon the arrow is more direct and faster.
When the slide block is adjusted to carry the arms to the position shown in Figs. {l and f 6, the inner portions of the arms will bear against the inner surface ofthe ledge 16 while the opposite sides of said arms will bear against the upper edges of the flange 13, thusv securing the arms firmly in a horizontal position to properly sustain the strain to which they are subjected in theuseof the device as a bow.
a "When the slide-block is moved to itsdownward limit, the armswill be drawn into the space within the handle, thus housing said arms and reducing the device into compact form so asto facilitate its shipment or the carrying of the same in the pocket of the ,7 Of course. do notwish to be limited to the; exactdetails oflconstruction as herein shown,"
as these maybe varied within the limits' of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
two studs carried by the block and projecting into the space within the body, two arms, the
inner ends of the'latter being pivoted upon said studs, openings in the upper end of the" body providing for the projection of said arms outward or the withdrawal of said arms inward,-two elastic strips attached to a the outer ends, of the arms and a sling to which the'inner ends of the elastic strips are attached.

Having'thus full' described myinvention,
whatI claim as new and'useful is Y 1 1. A combinedsling-shot and bow'comprisingla hollow handle having a longitudinal .7
slot in the face thereof, ablock'slidably housed within the handle, a screw projecting through said slot,-a;nut run upon said screw for holding the "block in any adj ustment, two arms, the inner'ends of which are-pivoted to said block, and an elastic sling attached tothe outer ends of said arms.-
2.rIn a'device of thevcharac'ter described, a
' a bodyihaving a flange aroundtheedges there of to form a space within the body, ,a face plate secured upon said flange, so astoenclose said space, .an outset groove formed in the faceplate andihaving a, slot in theiouter wall thereof, a block fitted to slide in said groove,
ia-scre w carried by the block andprojecting '7 a through saidslot, two arms, the inner ends V of which are pivoted to said block and a ledge partially closing the upper edge'of the body andserving as anabutment'i'for the arms whenv the. latter are adjusted to a;horizontal' position.
3. A combined sling-shot and whim inga hollow body, a face plate secured upon said body, said face plate having an oil-set groove therein with aglongitudinal slot 7 7 formed in the outenwall of said groove, ,a
