-LEAF SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV-1.1919.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK F. BURTON, 0F MOUNT CARMEL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATING' ARMS 00., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
LEAF-SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2'7, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK F. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Carmel, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leaf- Sights for Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, 1n-
Figure 1, a View in rear elevation of a leaf-sight embodying my invention and showing the leaf in its elevated position.
Fig. 2, a view thereof in side elevation.
Fig. 3, a detached view in rear elevation of the slide-body.
Fig. 4:, a plan view thereof.
Fig. 5, an end view thereof.
Fig. 6, a detached view of the slide assembly-screw.
Fig. 7, a detached view in rear elevation of one of the interchangeable sight-plates.
Fig. 8, a reverse plan view thereof.
Fig. 9, a detached view in rear elevation of another interchangeable sight-plate.
Fig. 10, a corresponding view of another interchangeable sight-plate.
Fig. 11, a corresponding view of another interchangeable sight-plate.
Fig. 12, a reverse plan view thereof.
Fig. 13, a reverse plan View of still another form which the interchangeable sightplate may assume.
My invention relates to an improved leafsight for firearms, the object being to provide a simple and convenient sight of the type described, with interchangeable sightplates to permit a given leaf-sight fixture to be adapted by the interchange of a series of specialized sight-plates to meet the idiosyncrasy or personal equation of the user ofthe arm.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a leaf-sight provided with a series of interchangeable sight-plates formed at their respective ends with positioning flanges and held in place by a single centrally arranged slide assembly-screw. My invention further consists in certain details of construction as will be hereinafter de scribed and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a leaf-sight comprising a sight-base 2, a leaf 3 turning on a pivot l, and a leaf-spring 5, all of standard construction. Upon the leaf 3, I mount a slide body 6 having a central block 7 which enters the longitudinal opening 8 in the leaf 3. The left hand side of this block is formed with segmental screw threads 9 which are engaged by an elevation screw 10 furnished at its upper end with a knurled finger button 11 located in a slot 12 in the outer end of the leaf 3.
The slide-body 6 is formed at its ends with rearwardly extending arms 13 formed with oppositely located positioning-slots or notches 14 respectively receiving positioning-flanges 15, located at the ends of a series of interchangeable sight-plates 16 which will vary in number and in sighting details according to requirements. Each of these plates is formed with a central screw-hole 17 receiving the slide assembly-screw 18 which enters a horizontal screw-hole 19 in the block 7 of the slide-body 6, the said screw-hole 19 being located centrally between the said notches 14:.
To interchange the sight-plates, it is only necessary to remove the screw 18 and replace the plate by another, using the same screw for securing it in place.
The differentiation of the sight-plate 16 will depend upon the idiosyncrasy of the user and the character of the use. Thus, the sight-plate 16 of Fig. 1, is formed with a small sight-opening 20 while the sightplate 16 of Fig. 7 is formed with a larger sight-opening 21. The sight-plate 16 of Fig. 7 is also furnished with an upturned battle-sight 22 which, it is to be understood, is used only in the depressed position of the sight-leaf 3. Fig. 9 is a detached view of the sight-plate 16 of Fig. 1. The sightplate 16 of Fig. 10 has a larger sight-opening 23 than is shown in any of the other sight-plates. The sight-plate 16 of Figs. 11 and 12 is peculiar in having its battlesight 24 upturned from its upper end while the sight-plate 16 of Fig. 13 is peculiar in having a notched battle-sight 25. Of course, the sight-plates shown and described are only illustrative of some of the interchan eable sight-plates that may be employed. In respect of their sighting features, they will be differentiated, but in respect of their assembly features they will be alike in being provided at their respective ends with positioning-flanges and with a central screwhole for the reception of the slide assemblyscrew.
I claim:
1. A leaf-sight for firearms, comprising a sight-base, a pivotal leaf, a vertically adjustable slide-body mounted thereupon and formed at its respective ends with positioning members of the slide-body, one or more of the said sight-plates being provided with up-turned battle-sights; and means for seguring the said sight-plates to the slide- 3. A leaf-sight for firearms, comprising a sight-base, a pivotal leaf, a vertically adjustable slide-body mounted thereupon and formed at its respective ends with positioning-members and with a centrally located screw-hole, a series of interchangeable differentiated sight-plates, each formed at its respective ends with positioning-members and with a screw-hole located centrally between its ends, and a screw passing through the said screw-holes for securing the plates to the body.
,7 In testimony whereof have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
FRANK F. BURTON. Witnesses: 4
