'for Firearms; and 'I' do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, iii- Figure 1 a view inside elevation of my improved interchangeable leaf rear sight for firearms as applied to a gun-barrel which is broken away, the sight heilig shown with its intercliangeable sight leaf in its elevated position.

My invention relates to an improved interchangeable leaf rear sight for firearms, the object being to produce a simple, convenient and eiiicient sight adapted to have its sight leaf interchanged with sight leaves of a variety of forms and characteristics without .inv alteration of the rest of the Structure, and without recourse to any tools or special appliances for effecting the change.

With these ends in view, my invention consists in an interchangeable leaf rear sight forl firearms, characterized by havin an interchangeable pivotal leaf in com ination with an elevator which holds it in place.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I forni two downwardly opening hook-like bearings G-G separated by a relatively wide clearance-space 7, at the extreme rear end of a yielding plate-like sight-base 8 the forward end of which is widened and formed upon its under face with a transversely arranged dovetail or undercut rib 9 adapted to enter a. corresponding' groove l() in the upper face of a gun-barrel 11. The said hook-like bearings (5 6 receive the projecting ends of a pivot-pin 12 permanently mounted in the two positioning-lugs 13-1C3, of an interchangeable sight leaf 1l, the said lugs being spaced apart to fit snugly into the clearance-space 7 aforesaid, perforated for the reception of the Said pivot-pin 12, and Separated from each other by a space 15 just wide enough for the reception of an inclined rib 1G which rises from the center of a slidingl wedge-like elevator 17 the fiat lower face of which bears directly upon the gun-barrel and the rear end of which is formed 'with a roughened thumb-piece 1S. The exposed central portion of the pivotpin 15 enters one or the other of the several range-notches 19 in the rib 1G according to the position of the elevator which is slid longitudinally under the leaf according as it is desired to raise or lower the leaf. For the reception of the forward portion of the elevator 17 the sight-base 8 is formed with a longitudinal slot 20 the rear end of which intersects the clearance-space 7 aforesaid. The positioning- lugs 13, 13, are formed with faces 21 and 22 located at substantially right angles to each other and co-acting with inclined surfaces 23 on opposite sides of the notched rib 16 for holding the leaf in its erect position as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, or in its depressed position as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 1. The said leaf is formed in the usual manner with a sighting-notch 2li around which the metal of the leaf is reduced in thickness for the purpose of definition, by a cup-shaped recess 25 which is the ordinary practice. The forward face of the leaf 14 is slightly grooved at opposite points as at 26, for the reception of the projecting ends of the pivot-pin 12.

My improved sight is used for sighting purposes in the ordinary manner by erecting or depressing its pivotal leaf, according as it is desired. to use the sight or not. If it is desired to interchange the leaf with a leaf of a different form or characteristics, the user of the arm has nothing to do but to grasp the leaf and s0 lift the saine vertically and thus suiliciently spring the yielding sight-base to permit the elevator to be withdrawn, after which the leaf is readily removed from the base by disengaging its pivot-pin from the downwardly opening hook-lik@J bearings thereof after which another leaf of different form and characteristics, but having a pivot-pin of the same size and length, may be engaged with the base after which the elevator is restored to its place.

All this may be done in a moments time, and without the use of any tools so that a sight, if provided with a set of interchangeable leaves of a variety 0f forms and characteristics, may be readily adapted to any kind of shooting, or to the visual powers of ing hook-like bearings separated by a clearthe individual.

I claim l. An interchangeable leaf rear sight for rearms, having a yielding sight-base formed at its rear end with two open pivot-bearings,4

a pivotal sight leaf furnished with a rigid pivot-pin the respective projecting ends of which enter the saidopen bearings in the sight-base, and an adjustable elevator constructed to normally hold the ends of the pins in suoli open bearings.

An interchangeable leaf rear sight for firearms, having a yielding sight-base formed at its rear end with two open pivot-bearings, a sight leaf furnished with a rigid pivot-pin the respective projecting ends of which enter the said open bearings in the sight-base, and a wedge-like elevator constructed to en- 4. 5. An interchangeable leaf rear sight for firearms, having a yielding sight-base formed at its rear end with two downwardly openance-space, a sight leaf formed with two separated positioning-lugs having bearing faces and carrying a pivot-pin adapted to have bearing in the said bearings, and an adjustable elevator formed with inclined surfaces upon which the said lugs ride, and having an upwardly projecting notched rib which enters the space between the said lugs for co-action with the central portion of the said pin.
