UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE},
LEWIS SHARPS BIXLER, 0F KENTON, OHIO.
TOY PISTOL.
Application filed February 26, 1923.
To all whom it may camera.-
Be it known that I, Lewis S. BIXLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Toy Pistol, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact description.
his invention relates to improvements in toys and has particular reference to a toy pistol.
An object of the invention is to provide improved means for preventing injury to the operator, due to back fire or flash, when the pistol is operated to explode the paper ca s.
Another object is to insure the explosion of a paper cap by the provision of a novel construction of anvil and hammer, the former of which is designed to receive and properly position the cap in the path of movement of the striking face of the hammer, which face is formed so that the same will always contact the portion of the cap containing the explosive regardless of the position of the cap in the anvil.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inven tive idea..
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pistol constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation of one of the sections of the pistol illustrating the relation of the anvil and hammer when the latter is in its operated position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary edge elevation with the hammer shown in section;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the hammer.
The pistol is shown as comprising a pair of sections 7 and 8 which, when combined and secured together in the ordinary manner, form the barrel 9 and handle 10. At the rear end of the barrel the pistol. is.
Serial No. 621,365.
provided with an anvil 11, the ends of which have the inturned opposed portions 12 forming a cap receiving recess 13 extending transversely of the barrel. The bottom of the recess is grooved, as best indicated at 14 in Figure 3, and said groove cooperates with the inturned portions 12 to properly position a paper cap on the anvil so as to be in the path of movement of the hammer 15 when the same is operated to explode the cap.
The hammer 15 includes the usual arm 16 which is pivoted between the sections 7 and 8 in the customary manner and engaged by a leaf spring 17 for exerting the proper pressure on the hammer when the trigger portion 18 is pulled rearwardly. The body portion of the hammer is of substantially triangular formation in side elevation having its front end straight or fiat to provide the striking face 19 and its rear edge curved. The body portion of the hammer including the striking face is of less width than the distance between the adjacent edges of the inturned portions 12 of the anvil so that when the hammer is operated said body portion will be free to move between said edges and the striking face engaged with the anvil 11. The length of the st-riking face 19 is substantially the same as the depth of the recess 13 so as to insure the engagement of the striking face with the portion of the paper cap containing the explosive when the hammer is operated.
The rear curved edge of the body portion of the hammer is widened to provide an arcuate flange 20 having portions extending laterally from the side faces of the body portion so that the-flange is disposed in a plane transverse to the handle and barrel of the pistol. The flange conforms to the curvature of the rear edge of the body portion and is of a width substantially equal to that of the anvil 11 and overlaps said anvil with the forward portion of the flange overhanging the inturned portions 12 when the hammer is in its operated position. By reason of this construction, it will be obvious that when a cap is exploded by the operation of the hammer, any back fire or flash from said cap will be deflected by the flange 20 and be prevented from passing rearwardly thereof, thus insuring against injury to the operator.
What is claimed is:
In a toy pistol, an anvil having inturned portions at opposite sidesthereof .and a groove at its bottom to provide "a recess for receiving a paper cap. a hammer having a striking face of less Width than the distance between said inturned portions and a. length 10 anvil so as to overlap said anvil when the 15 handle is in its operated position.
