To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. B A1LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cromwell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-f Pistols, of which the following is a specithe adjacent way 10, for a purpose to be deoation.
My invention relates to improvements in tape pistols of the type suitable for firing fulminate tape, and the objects of my 1mprovement are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and eiiiciency in use. V
In the accompanying drawing :F1gure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a tape pistoll showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the trigger member pulled toward the handle. Fig. 3 is a View similar of the same with theparts in the,

and the barrel member jD-extending out' wardly therefrom, and a magazine E maybe provided below the outer end of the barrel member D suitable for housing a fulminate tape F. The lower part of the upper wall of the barrel member D is provided with a way l() which extends from the magazine E rearwardly and merges into the body or shank C .and is suitable for guiding the tape F from the magazine E past the inner end 11 as the same is fed along by mechanism to be described, the inner, free end of the tape being disposed of in any manner desired. The inner end 11 of the way 10 serves as .an anvil to receive the blows of the hammer G. I'prefer to form the said hammer G of flat spring material or strip, the inner end 12 being rigidly secured in any 4desired manner in the handle B and the same is curved and shaped suitably so that the portion 13 adjacent the forward free end 23 will serve as a hammer headand coperate with the anvil 11 in Vpercussively operating on the spots of ulminate with which the tape F is provided and serve to fire the same when the spring hammer G is released from restraint in a manner to be described, and will be normally engaged with the said anvil 11 by reason of the resiliency of the said spring G.
The extreme or free end 23 of `the spring hammer G is deflected downward from the way 10 outward from the hammer head portion 18 and the anvil, forming a V shaped recess 24 between the said free end 23 and -stud or pin H. The said body A is a skeleton structure, has a. solid leftlateral vWall15, and the right side may be provided with a. closure Vthat is removable, permitting access to the operating mechanism. The front edge 16 of the vway 10 may be finished suitably to coperate with a radial wing 17 on the trigger member I laterally guiding the same during the reciprocal movementthereof, or other means may be provided for effecting such guiding. The said trigger member I comprises a vertically extending body 18 having at the upper end a rearwardly eX- tending arm 19, the upper portion of which and below the ,said guide wing portion 17 and inward from the body portion 18 there is provided a laterally projecting lug or stud 20 which in length may be somewhat less than one half the width of the strip"of which the spring hammer G is formed.
At the front end of the arm 19 and corres onding to the upper or tip end of the body portlon 18 there is provided a Vshaped biting edge 25, suitable for engaging with the tape F interposed between` t-he trigger member I and the way 10. The lug 20 and t-he edge 25 constitute an interrupted way suitable for engaging with the way 10, or the tape interposed therebetween as mentioned and for feeding the said tape F from the magazine E along the said Way 10, between the anvil 1 1 and the hammer head 13, responsive to a movement" of the trigger I toward the shank C. At the lower end of the said body portion 18 there is provided a pivotal hole 21 suitable for engaging with the pivotal stud H on the body C, and which is of such dimensions that alimited vertical movement is permitted of the pivotal stud H and the trigger member I. The said trigger extends outwardly vfrom the middle of the, body portion 18, n the side remote from the arm 19, and comprises preferably a loop or ,closed ring 22 suitable for being enlmoved back and forth thereby.

A continuation of such movement serves to turn the trigger member I, with the lug 20 engaged with the spring G and anvil 11 constituting the wall of the recess 24 asa fulcrum, elevating'the biting edge 25 into position to engage with the way-10 or the tape F interposed therebetween. A furtherL continuation serves to forcibly depress the hammer head 13 by reason of the lug20 being forcibly entered between the' same and the anvil 11, which results in freeing the tape F from the holding elfect of the hammer and anvil and simultaneously therewith the biting edge 25 serves to feed vthe tape F between the hammer head 13 and the anvil 11, such movementbeing permitted by reason of the play or leeway provided between the hole 21 and the stud H, permitting the necessary elevation bodily of the trigger member I relatively to the body A. As' the feeding and ring movement described is further eontinued, the lug 20 finally comes into registration with a notch J provided in the spring G which releases the same and permits oi forcibly returning the hammer head 13 to the anvil 11 and operating peroussively on the tape F interposed therebetween. A reversal of the movement described or a return movement of the trigger member I 0perates to restore the trigger member to the normal position described. Accordingly by repeatedly reciprocating-the trigger the tape F is intermittently fed along the way 11 and differentportions thereof are successively placed in position between the hammer head and Aanvil and tired by the percussive effect of the spring hammer G.
I lclaim as my invent-ion 1. In a pistol,' a body having a way suitable for guiding a tape, the inner end suitable for an anvil, a spring hammer comprising a spring, fixedly supported at one end, having a hammer head suitable for coperating with the said anvil, and a trigger member, pivotally mounted on the said body, means responsive to a movement of the said trigger member operative to separate an anvil at one end thereof, a hammer havf ing av head andmeans for resiliently holding the said hammer in engagement with the said anvil,I and a trigger member operatively mounted on the said body and means on said trigger member and in contact with the said hammer head and anvil and operative responsive to a movement of the said trigger member to separate the said hammer and anvil. v

In a pistol, a body having a way, and an anvil at one end thereof, a hammer comprising a piece of resilient material, iXedly secured b v one end, having a hammer head cooperative with the said anvil'adjacent the other end, and the free end cooperative with the said way to form a recess, and having a the said anvil, a trigger member having la f tape bearing projection on the upper fend and a finger piece near the lower end, and means responsive to a movement of the sald trigger to bring the said projection in engagement with the said first' way.

In a pistol a body having a laterally projecting stud and provided with a way and an\,anvil at one end thereof, a hammer head in resilient engagement with the'said anvil, a trigger member having a lug near the rear end of the upper portion and a biting edge atthe front end thereof, a hole at the lower end engaged with the'said stud, and a finger piece on the trigger, the said trigger member operative consecutively on a movement thereof to bring the lug and biting edge into engagement with the said first way, to enter the said lug between the said hammer head and anvil, and to releasev the said hammer and permit the return thereof to position of engagement with the said anvil.' y
