' fspecicatitn ofretters Patent. Patented @111624, 15H9,
To all whom 'it mag/:concern Y Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEr, Ia
' Vcitizen ofthe United States, Yand a resident of Cromwell, in the county of Middlesex and .Stateof Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved `'Ioy Pistol, of which the fol- 'lowingis a specification.
, My invention relates to the class of toys used for detonating so called paper caps,
and an object of my invention, among others,
is to provide sucha toy that shall be exy. tremely simple in its construction and operation. Y Y
One form of toy embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may beattained, is illustrated in the accomj panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved f toy pistol.
Fig. 2 is a top Yplan view with parts i broken away to show construction, and with Y the percussion plate. in its retracted position.
- In the accompanying drawings the numeral indicates the frame of my improved Y `pistol that may be constructed of any suitable metal, .and that preferably comprises a Web 6 located at one side of a plane extending vertically through the pistol lengthwise thereof, a flange 7 projecting slightly beyond this web at the top and on one side thereof and a ange 8, similarI tothe ange 7 pro,-
' A jectin'gfrom the opposite side of said web 5. i 'Y Y U-bend in the spring passes underneath a notch in a lug 14 projecting from the web 6,
along the top and back to form a housing ,for'the working parts of the pistol. These working parts include a cap wheel 9 pivotally mounted on a stud l() projecting from the inner face of the web 6. This cap wheel has recesses 11 formed-'about its to receive the paper caps.
periphery A percussion plate l2 is slidably mounted on the frame withva detonating lip 13V at its rear end.V A spring 16, preferably of U- shape, has one bent end projecting into a recess 4L inthe lipy or hammer head 13. The
fand the Vend of the spring opposite that engaging the percussion plate 12 is bent to rest with one edge at least in a notch formed in l. the yside of a lug 15, the notches in the two y, lugs together with the bent ends of the '4 spring securely holding the spring in place the spring projecting into a recess in the hammer head also supports the rear end of lthepercussion plate 12 and holds it in place.
l applicati@ mea December 3o, 191s. :l sriai No. 268,836.
' In its forward position, `the lip 13 is located in-one ofthe recesses 11. The plate has an offsetv part17 atitsforward end terminating in a linger 18 that projects through a slot 19 in the web 6,' this finger projecting Vforwardly and serving to hold this end of the plate in position. A trigger 20 projects from the lower edge of the plate, toward its front end, and a shield 21 also constituting a part of the plate, projects from its lower edge to at least partially cover the cap wheel 9.
A notch 22 is formed in the lower edge of the slot 19 to receive the offset part 17 of the plate and hold the latter in its rearward position. The offset part is released from the notch by pressure on the trigger 20, and when so released the spring 16 will force the plate quickly forward causing the lip 13 te strike a cap and explode it.
A detent 23 is formed on the lower edge of the shield 21, this detent extending inwardly to' engage the prongs 24 forming the recesses 11 on the cap wheel. As the plate is forced backwardly the detent will engage a projection and rotate the wheel one step, and in the forward movement of the plate the detent will spring outwardly and slip past the next projection on the wheel.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means.
I claim:
1. In a toy pistol, a frame, a cap wheel rotatably mounted on the frame, a plate movably mounted on the frame and on the opposite side of the wheel from the frame, said plate having a detonating lip positioned to strike caps on the cap wheel, and means for temporarily holding the plate in its rearward position.
2. In a toy pistol, a frame having a recess opening to one side, a cap wheel rotatably mounted in said recess, a plate movably mounted on the frame and forming a cover for said recess, said plate having a detonating lip positioned to strike caps on the cap wheel, and means for temporarily holding the plate in its rearward position.
3. In a toy pistol, a frame, a cap Wheel rotatably mounted on the frame, a plate latter at its rear end.
