TRIGGER MECHANISM FOR FIREARMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Looms N. DmHM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Trigger Mechanism for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of firearms that are intended to be fired while manually supported, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a trigger mechanism for such firearms that shall be particularly eflicient in its operation.
One form oftrigger mechanism embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pistol embodying my invention with parts broken away to show construction.
Fig. 2 is a view in cross section through a portion of the pistol shown in Fig. l and on plane denoted by dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the handle, 6 the receiver,
7 the breech-bolt, 8 the barrel, and 9 the trigger guard of my improved firearm, all of which parts may be of ordinary and well known construction and for which reason a detailed description thereof is omitted herein.
A recess 10 is formed in that part of the frame embodying the handle and opening from a hole 11 within the trigger guard. A trigger lever 12 is pivotally mounted, preferably at its lower end, within the recess 10 and a trigger 13 is also pivotally mounted at its upper end within said recess and extending into the hole 11. The back edge of the trigger rests against the trigger lever 12, and the contacting edges of the trigger and lever are preferably curved so that there is a rolling contact as the parts are moved, and the point of contact will be Specification of Letters Patent.

A sear bar 14: is pivot ally attached to the trigger lever 12 and the opposite end of this sear bar is properly constructed to operate any suitable form of sear mechanism (omitted from the showing herein), this bar constituting a portion of the sear mechanism.
A spring 15 having one end thrusting against the trigger lever and its opposite end against the frame is employed to hold said lever and the trigger in their forward positions.
By introducing the trigger lever to receive the thrust of a pull upon the trigger, a livelier movement of the parts is obtained than would be had in case the bar 1a were attached directly to the trigger. By giving the proper form to the curved contacting edges of the lever and trig er sliding contact may be practically eliminated and substantially pure rolling contact obtained, and the leverage may be so determined that the force required to pull the trigger backward may be gradually increased or decreased or may remain constant, and while a somewhat regular curve on the two parts is shown herein, I contemplate any form of contacting surface on either of said members. Another feature of this construction results from the fact that the lever, when the parts are in their forward position, fills the slot into the frame, and as the trigger is pulled backwardly and the lever is moved into the slot, the trigger takes its place and fills the slot, so that the slot is constantly filled and this will prevent the introducing of dirt that would affect the operation of the parts.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim:
1. A firearm including a frame, a trigger pivotally mounted in the frame, a trigger lever pivotally mounted in the frame, said clever and trigger having curved meeting frame, a'trigger lever pivotally mounted at its lower end in the frame in position to contact with the trigger, and sear mechanism operatively connected to be actuated by the trigger lever.
4:. A firearm including a frame, a trigger pivotally mounted at its upper 'end' in the frame, a trigger lever pivotally mounted at its lower end in the frame, the trigger having an outwardly curved back edge and said lever having an inwardly curved front edge,
said edges contacting one with the other, and sear mechanism operatively connected to be actuated by the trigger lever.
5. 7. A firearm including a framehaving a curved frontredge with a recessopeningito said edge, a trigger lever pivotally mounted at its lower end in said recess and extending across the front thereof, the front edge of the walls of said recess being curved inwardly, a trigger pivotally mounted in said opposite part of said recess and projecting downwardly and having an outwardly curved back edge contactingwith said lever, A
