Patented Mar. 9, 1926.
HEINRICH MEYER, OF HIDDESEN, NEAR DETMOLD, GERMANY.
MINER S SAFETY LAMP.
Application filed March 21, 1925.
3 To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH MEYER, a citizen of Germany, residing at Hiddesen, near Detmold, in the State of Lippe-Detmold, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Safety Lamps (for which I have filed an application in Germany July 14, 1923); and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in miners safety lamps, and more particularly in lamps of the type provided with a re flector adapted to throw the light rays to one side, said reflector being mounted for being moved away from the source of light for permitting the same to throw the light to all sides and to illuminate the whole room. The object of the improvements is to provide a lamp of this type in which the reflector is protected from injury and dust, and with this object in View my invention consists in disposing the reflector within the glass bulb, screen or other frame surrounding the lamp and providing the said reflector or a part thereof with means adapted to be operated from the outside of the bulb or frame for removing the reflector away from the lamp.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate cor responding parts. In said drawing,
Fig. 1, is a sectional elevation of the lamp,
Fig. 2, is a sectional plan view of Fig. 1 taken on the line 22,
Fig. 3, is a sectional elevation showing a modification, and
Fig. 4, is a top-plan view of Fig. 3 with the glass bulb removed.
In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the safety lamp comprises a casing h enclosing an electric battery, an incandescent lamp (4, a cylindrical screen i enclosing the incandescent lamp, and a reflector composed of a stationary part b and a movable part c. The movable part c is secured to two arms 70 fixed to rock shaft m. mounted in uprights 'n, and having a sprocket wheel 51 secured thereto; The said sprocket wheel is connected Serial No. 17,271.
by a chain 1" with a sprocket wheel 8 secured to the spindle t of a milled disk 0.
As appears more particularly from Fig. 1 the rear part e of the reflector can be re moved from the main part b and the lamp a by rocking the shaft m by means of the milled disk 0 and the chain and sprocket gearing g, 1", s, the shaft m being held in set position by friction. The reflector including the removable part thereof is disposed internally of the frame or screen i, and the milled disk Z) for moving the part 6 is located outside the frame 2', so that the re" flector may be shifted without removing the hood 2'.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification in which the whole reflector 32 is mounted for being removed away from the lamp a, said reflector being likewise located internally of the glass bulb 0 enclosing the lamp. As shown the reflector 10 is secured to a pair of arms cl fixed to a rock shaft 9, which rock shaft is mounted in the upper wall of the casing h and carries a milled disk -0. The operation of the reflector by means of the milled disk 0 is similar to the operation of the part c of the reflector shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 3 shows the reflector respectively in reflecting and inoperative positions.
lVhile in describing the invention reference has been made to particular examples embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the constructions shown in the drawing, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. A safety lamp comprising a casing, a transparent hood on said casing, a light source mounted on said casing and located within the hood, a side reflector pivotally mounted on said casing and normally below the light source to allow light to pass in all directions through the hood and means operable from the outside of the hood for moving the reflector into or out of position for reflecting light through one side portion of the hood and covering the opposite portion of the hood. I p
2. A safety lamp, comprising a light source, a hood enclosing the same and hav ing :3 wall permeable to light, a reflector within said head and comprising a station'- ary and a movable section, and means to move said movable section into and out of position for reflecting); light emanating from said light source through one permeable 5 part of said Wall and covering another permeable part of said Wall.
3. A safety lamp, comprisingalight source, a hood enclosing the same and having a Wall permeable to light, a reflector 10 Within said hood and comprising a stationmy and a movable section, and means operative, from the outside of the hood for moving said movable section into and out of position for reflecting light emanating from said light source through one permeable part 15 of said Wall and covering another permeable part of said Wall. I
In testimony whereof I hereunto af'fix my HEINRICH MEYER.
signature.
