THOMAS W. PARKER, OF GRIGGSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-C HIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,538, dated December 8, 1874; application filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. PARKER, of Griggsville, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Chimney, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to providing each of the longitudinal halves of a glass lamp-chimney with corresponding notches or open slots in one of the adjacent or meeting edges, and in a spring-clam p having a lug or nib adapted to fit into said slots. Expansion of the chimney from heat is thus permitted, and yet its parts or halves are held firmly together, and lengthwise movement of one on the other prevented, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the chimney. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the top, taken on the line a; m. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the bottom on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A and B represent the two parts of the chimney. O is the joint between them. When put together, as seen in the drawing, the two parts form a tube of the size and shape of the ordinary lamp-chimney. D is aspring-band around the bottom ofthe chimney. This band is coiled position around the chimney. Instead of the nicks and nib there may be a head at the upper end of the chimney to hold the spring, if desired.
By this arrangement the parts of the chimney are allowed freedom of expansion, and yet held firmly together and prevented from moving lengthwise on each other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the spring-band F, having lug G, with the halves A B of the chimney having nicks or slots H, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
THOMAS W. PARKER.
