IMPROVEMENT IN NECK=TIE PLATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,502, dated December 8, 1874; application filed October 17, 1874.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARTIN DRENNAN, 0 Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bow-Frame, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a little frame of metal, jet, or other suitable or approved substance, adapted, by means of three vertical parallel looping holes or openings through it side by side, and one horizontal opening at right angles to, and below, the others, for forming various bows, knots, and ties of scarfs for neck wear for men and women, and other parts of womens dress; and, in addition to the said openings, which are for looping the scarf through to form bows and the like, there are slots adapted for attaching the .frame to a belt to be worn as a slide or buckle, and it is provided with a pin for fastening it to the dress, the pin being detachable for using different kindsfor instance, a single pin for attaching it to the dress, and a double pin for the hair, in case the frame is to be used for attaching a head ornament.

Figures 1 and 2 are front elevations of two different forms of bows, such as may be readily formed on the frame; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the frame, with a bow indicated on the front by dotted lines.

A represents alittle thin plate of metal or other approved substance, of an y suitable size, and about twice as long as it is wide, with an extension, B, in the width of the middle portion of one edge, which in use will be the bottom or lower edge. This plate has three wide openings in it, numbered,respectively, 1 2 3, the said openings being transverse to the long axis, and in the extension B is another opening, 4, the said openings being for looping and drawing the scarf through in various ways to make bows of different kinds. Besides the openings there are two slots, 5, parallel to and between the transverse openings, for fitting in aribbon or belt, I), to attach the plate to the waist or other part of the dress. E is a pin for fastening the plate onto the dress 5 and Fis a hair-pin for attaching it to the hair. These pins are con trived for putting on and taking off readily, to substitute one for another. The single pin has a hook, which hooks through the plate so as to be locked fast when the point is adjusted in the hook G, and the double hook is connected by passing both of its prongs through holes in the plate; but any approved modes of detachably attaching the pins will be employed.

By the use of this plate bows of different kindsas sailors and milliners bows, and those known virot and trio may be made of a scarf, H, more readily and better than they can be in the ordinary way, even by skilled persons; and they can also be made by unskilled persons with the aid of directions which it is proposed to put up with each article sold, and it will save time, besides making more artistic bows. The bows may also be made with less material, as the puffs or loops will be held by the plate so as to show to better advantage, and they may be made of several short pieces.

The material is not injured by creasing, as when the bows are tied in the ordinary way. The material can be worn longer, for when the exposed parts are soiled they can be shifted in the plate so as to be concealed, while the previously-protected parts may be exposed. The bow can be made larger or smaller, to suit the wearer, by pulling the puff out or in.

To make the virot bow with this plate, double the scarf, and pass the loop through opening 4, from front, until the ends project the length requiredsay, about four inches, more or less-then pass a loop through each opening 1, 2, and 3 from back to front, and

puff out the loops as much as possible at the iront without exposing the hems, and smooth out the ends.

To make the milliners bow, tie aloose knot in the center of the scarf, lay it on the face of the plate, take the ends to the back, puff one loop through 1 and another through 3, also pass the ends through 4, and the center of the knot, and puff out the loops. Other bows may be made in various ways upon the same general plan.

When the plate is to be used as a slide for the belt, or is to be tied onto the dress by a and a fastening-pin, as an improved article of ribbon, the belt or ribbon will be passed manufacture.
