Description

UNITED srarns A'INT OFFICE.
C. W. SALADEE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
MODE OF ADJUSTING- CARRIAGE-TOPS.
To all 'whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, CYRUs WV. SALADEE, of
i Columbus, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Y Adjusting Carriage- Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature `of my invention consists in the application of a light iron rod connected to the top props and extending around the back of the seat near the top edge of the same, and is so arranged that while the passenger is seated in the carriage the top may be let down or raised up with one hand.
To enable others, skilled in the manufacture of carriages, to make and use my invention, I will endeavor to describe its mode of construction and operation.
In the first place, I construct the top after the usual manner. In the top prop A, (Figure l) I make two rivet, or bolt holes at B, about 12 or 15 inches from the ibottom C. lI next make the rod D, sutliciently long, to extend around the back of the seat, as seen in Fig. 2, with corresponding holes through each end to lit those made at B, in the top prop A, before referred to, and connect the two irons, A and D, together by means of rivets or bolts. The rod D D, Fig. 2, I attach to the back of the seat by means of two short rods E E, the top ends of which are welded tothe lateral rod D D, and the lower extremities are connected to the seat back, at F F in such manner as to form a joint. Thus when the passenger is on the seat, he has but to put his hand on the rod, D D, at G, and by a slight pressure the top props are drawn back and the top is let down, and is raised in like manner, without changing the position of the operator. This being a convenience and an advantage not attained in the ordinary top, nor in any of those patented. I therefore disclaim the use of one straight rod, or bar, of iron when placed on the inside of `the back to the seat with both extremities passing through a square hole in the lower end of the top props and operated upon by a lever, as that forms no part of my invention. Neither do I claim the long perpendicular rods at the back of the seat and connected to the back bowas that patented by Mr. Huntington; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The lat-eral rod D D in combination with the top props A, Fig. l, (or A A Fig. 2.)
2. I also claim the perpendicular rods E, E in combination with the lateral rod D D and the back of the seat, for the purpose of throwing back, or raising up the t-op while seated in the carriage, substantially as set forth.
