Description

N. N. SELBYL Patented Sep t. 2. 1856 I N PETERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WIASHINGTON. D. G
N. N. SELBY, OF FAIRVIEW, PENNSYLVANIA.
WHIFFLETREE FOR DETACHING HORSES FROM GARRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,670, dated September 2, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. N. SELBY, of F airview, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Detaching Horses from Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact descriptioin of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of my improved whiflietree and Fig. 2 is a cross section at the point where the bolt for the shafts pass through it.
I construct the whifllet-ree a in the common way with tug-pins in each end as j, j, on which the tug loops 0, c, are placed, and detached by depressing the spring I), to the dotted line is or shoulder on the bolt f, which prolongs the ends of the spring to C, C, and carries the tug loops free from the pins at pleasure. The bolt f passes through the spring at m, which serves to equalize the motion and keep the spring steady.
The same letters on Figs. 1 and 2 refer to the same parts. 7
securing it to loop,
6, Fig. 2, a cross section of the Whifiletree where the bolt f passes through it; 0?, the brace or fulcrum which supports the lever g, h, the cord attached to the lever g, and may be extended to the carriage to be used at pleasure; i, Fig. 2, the rod connecting the lever g with the spring I). The loops or turns on theends of the spring I; are made of sufficient size to admit any common size tugand the inside of the turns or loops has a hole in each to admit the tug pins j, j, and should be made to fit closely to the ends of the whitlletree by a tight force of the spring.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The application of the spring I) the whole length of the whiflietree and turned over at each end forming loops for the harness tugs, in combination with the bolt f, pins j j and fulcrum (Z, operated by the lever g, and 70, substantially as herein described.
N. N. SELBY.
