IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,195, dated November 24,1874; application led September 12, 1874.

To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, ADAM COOK, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved washing machine, with wash board thrown up; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same with wash-board in position on the clothes, and Fig. 3 is a detail bottoinview of the corrugated wash-board.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, A represents the wash-tub, which is placed on a vertical central shaft, B, passing through the strong diagonal bracepieces B', applied firmly to the upright supporting-standards O, with connecting detachable rounds C. The rounds O are applied only at opposite sides to the standards, so that Athe attendant may readily operate the machine at the intermediate sides, with no rounds to hinder the legs or feet. A slotted quadrantal piece, D, connects at suitable height two adjoining standards O. A clampscrew, a., of one standard, running along its slotted part, Aserves to bind ijrmly the standards and rounds together after the latter have been inserted. The tub-supporting frame can in this manner be made cheaper, and is more readily shipped and set up;

VVash-tub A is provided at its upper circumference with a solid ring or fly-wheel, E, which is supported on strong bands or brackets b of the tub, to be readily used as a hand-wheel for revolving the tub or swinging the same alternately from right to left, as found most convenient. The bottoni of the tub is conf structed with parallel eorrugations, and with a stationary upright standard, F, of wood or suitable metal, for the purpose of guiding the wash-board G thereon when it is placed in position on the clothes. The under side of the wash-board has similar parallel corrugations or grooves as the bottom of the tub, which are more advantageous than the radial grooves commonly in use, as the clothes are only taken hold of and rubbed when the corrugations are crossing each other, but slide lengthwise in the same when they are parallel to each other, so that the tub may be more quickly and readily started by the operator without requiring the extra power necessary to overcome the continual drag or pull of the clothes in radial grooves. rlhe wash-board G slides by its upright guide-standards G in perforations of the diagonal cross-bar H, and is held by a suitable spring-catch, d, Aof the same in raised position, so that the clothes may be readily placed in the tub or wrung out. The crossbar H is pivoted to diagonally-opposite standards O, being provided at one side with a setscrew, e, for being tightened thereto, and at the other side with a slotted segmental guideplate, f, and clamp-screw f', for being swung over with the wash-board, and secured in a position entirely out of the way for the manipulation of the clothes.

When the clothes are put in the tub with the water and suds, the clamping device is released, and the wash-board swung back and lowered thereon. The tub is then rotated or reciprocated by the ily-wheel until the clothes are cleaned, then taken out and passed through the wringer, which is attached to its supporting-piece, and therefore not liable to injure the tub. The whole machine forms thus a very strong, durable, and convenientlyoperated washin g apparatus.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The wash tub supporting frame, coinposed of diagonal braces Bf, upright standards O, detachable side rounds O', and segmental wringer-piece D, applied as described, for binding the parts rigidly together, as specied.

2. The wash-tub having attached at its upper circumference a ily or handle wheel for operating the tub, as set forth.
