Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. ALDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157, 186, dated November 24, 1874; application led October 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concgrn:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. ALDEN, of
' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and `useful Improvement in Oar-Sash and Blind-Supporter, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of my device illustrating its use, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device that shall be both detachable and portable, designed especially for use in railroad-oars for supporting the Window sash or blind at any desired elevation, but which may be used with facility for supporting any window-sash, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists of a detachable and portable sash and blind supporter formed of the bar and plate, constructed as hereinafter fully described, to adapt it for use det-achably, as set forth.
A represents a bar of a length depending upon the kind of a window and the height ot' the sash, in connection with which the device is to be used. The bar A may be made of wood or metal, and rectangular, round, or of other convenient form, and of such a size as will conveniently support the window sash or blind. B is a metal plate, through which, near one end, is formed a hole of such a size and shape that the bar A will readily pass through it, and a little longer than the dimension of said bar in the direction of the length of the plate B, so that the said plate, when left free, or when supporting a weight, will take an inclined position. 'Ihe projecting end of the plate B is bent into such aform as to fit upon the bottom rail of the sash, and will thus be prevented from slipping oii said rail.
When the window is stationary, the friction of the plate B upon the bar A will be sufficient to support the sash; but when the sash or blind of a car-window is to be supported, the constant jarring to which it is subjected would cause the plate B to slide down the bar A. A
In this case the side of the barA farthest from the sash is notched, toothed, corrugated, or otherwise roughened, which will prevent the plate B from slipping down, and will hold it securely in place when adjusted.
In using the device, the lower end of the bar A is placed upon the base of the windowframe, the plate B is raised to the desired height, and the sash or blind is raised and lowered upon the plate B, where it will be securely held.
rlhis device can readily be carried by a traveler in his traveling-bag, or even in his pocket, and can be adjusted to its place in a moment when required for use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A detachable and portable sash and blind supporter, formed of the notched bar A and the supporting-plate B, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it for use, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM C. ALDEN.
