WALDEMAR KROLL, OF PHILADELEHIA, FENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO THE YALE & TOYVNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
, CHAIN AND LOCK THEREFOR.
Application filed December 6, 1923. Serial No. 678,959.
To all whom it may concern i 7 Be it known that I, VVALDEMAR Know, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chains and Locks Therefor, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in chains and fastenings therefor used in securing two objects together, such as spare tires to their supports, gates to gate posts, &c. It has been the usual practice to use a loose padlock to connect the two ends of the chain after it has been passed around the objects.
One object of the invention is to attach the padlock to the chain so that it cannot lpe detached from one end of the chain and A further object of the invention is to attach the body of the lock to the chain so that, while the shackle can be opened, it cannot be released from one of the links of the chain.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view of an automobile tire chain and lock, the lock being closed;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the lock and a portion of the chain;
Fig. 3 is a View showing the lock open and attached to one end of the chain; and
Fig. 4 is a view of a modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a chain made of a series of links of the type clearly illustrated therein. This chain is of a length to pass around the objects to be connected.
It is preferably provided with a leather casing 2. 3 is a lock of any suitable type, having a body portion 4 and a shackle 5, which is. pivoted to the body portion at 6. in the present instance. The shackle 5 extends through the link 1 of the chain and is held in place by an attachment 7, which is pivoted at 8 to the body 4 of the lock and asses through the link 1. The attachment is so connected to the link 1 of the chain and the body of the lock that the lock can have a certain amount of movement and can be opened to allow the link, at the other end of the chain, to be detached from the shackle, or to be attached thereto, but the shackle cannot be removed from the link 1,
When the shackle engages both ends of the chem, as in Fig. 1, and the lock is closed, it becomes one of the links of the chain, but
look.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the attachment 7 is in the form of a U-shaped yoke, which passes through a link of the chain and is pivotally attached to both sides of the look casing.
In Fig. at, a modification is shown, in which the attachment is composed of two bars 7*, connected by a cross bar 7", which passes through a link. Other forms of attachment may be used without departing from the essential features of the invention, which is to attach the lock to a link of the chain so that the shackle cannot be removed from the link.
In some instances, a wire rope having a loop, or eye, at each end may be substituted for the chain, or the device may have a wire rope section with a series of chain links at each end.
The invention can be used to attach a spare tire to its support on an automobile; to attach a gate to a gate post; or it may be used to attach any loose object to a fixed one.
While the lock is shown as engaging the two end links of a chain, the lock may engage any link at the free end of the chain. depending upon the size of the objects to be connected.
I claim:
1. The combination of a chain; a lock having a body portion and a shackle, the shackle being arranged to connect links at the two ends of the chain; and means for retaining the shackle in one of said links when the lock is open.
2. The combination of a chain; alock having a body portion and a. shackle pivoted thereto, said shackle extending through a link of the chain; and an attachment extending from the body of the lock to said chain link, which allows the lock freedom of movement, so that the shackle can engage other links of the chain.
8. The combination of a chain; a lock having a body portion; a shackle pivoted thereto, said shackle extending through one of the links of the chain; and an attachment, in the form of a yoke, pivoted to the casing of the lock and extending through the link f the little strain being placed on the body of the chain through which the shackle extends, said lock having sufficient independent movement to allow the shackle to engage other links at the opposite end of the chain.
4. The combination of a chain; a lock having a body portion and a shackle, said shackle extending through one of the links of the chain; and an attachment pivoted to the casing of the lock and extending through a link at the end of the chain, through which the shackle extends, said lock having sufiicient independent movement to allow the shackle to engage other links of the chain. WALDEMAR KROLL.
