Watch-Guard Attachments.

INVENTOR' was s'mbn' In no. PHOTO-LITHjS I. 41mm Pucsmm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED S. POTTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH H. FANNING, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-GUARD ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,080, dated November 24, 1874; application filed July 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED S. POTTER, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Watch-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in so constructing an ornamental attachment to be worn on a watchguard that, in addition to being a mere article of ornament, it shall serve the useful purpose of furnishing a device capable of use as a watch-key or a seal, andwhich is detachable from the ornament of which at other times it forms a part.
The article is composed of two members, both of which are shown as combined at Figure 1. One member consists of the device shown at Fig. 2, in which A represents a suitable winding-key for a watch, and B (which composes the head of the key) is a seal. It is obvious that it can be used either as a watchkey or as a seal. The other member of the ornamental article is a holder, 0, Fig. 1, which is furnished with a ring, a, for attaching it to the watch-guard. It may be of any pattern which the taste or fancy may suggest, provided it be so constructed as to be capable of receiving the stem A, substantially as shown in the drawings, and of holding it by some suitable fastening device which will permit the two members to become combined or disconnected at the pleasure of the wearer. The two members, when united, constitute an ornamental charm for the watch-guard.
The fastening which I have shown on the drawing at Fig. 3, and which I prefer, is substantially the same as that which is fully described in another application for Letters Patent filed by me, of even date herewith, for an improved fastening for neck-chains, &c., and to which reference may be had.
Other forms of fastenings may, however, be
used, if preferred.
In this instance the stem of the seal or key member is furnished with a projecting bit, I).
The axis of the holder 0 is bored out and occupied by a tube, which is of the proper form to receive the stem. The wall of the tube is slit longitudinally, as shown at 0, so as to allow the bit 12 to enter, and at the end of such slit the surface of the wall is cut away, as seen at d, so as to give passage to the bit and enable the member A to be partially rotated on its axis after it has been inserted in the holder. A return-notch, 6, parallel with the slit 0, is cut in the wall of the tube, as shown, into which the bit I) is forced and held by means of a spring, f.
It. will readily be seen that the advantage which the article described over other key or seal attachments in use is, that the key or seal is removable from the charm of which it forms a member, so that it can be used with out being hampered by the guard chain. Moreover, the watch-key pipe or barrel is kept perfectly protected from dust when the key or seal member is combined with its fellow member to make the complete ornament.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 As a new article of manufacture, the sea attachment for watch-guards, consisting essentially of the holder 0 and the detachable seal and key member A B, combined with said holder and secured by suitable fastenings, the whole forming an ornamental attachment for watch-guards, substantially as described and set forth.
WVitnesses: ALFRED S. POTTER.
O. L. Boswoa'rn, J. O. B. Woons.
