The lower ends of the leg gripping bars are preferably secured to a lower bar holding plate E, which in the construction shown is substantially square, see Fig. 7, and

The lower bar engaging plate E may be held in operative relation to the lower ends of the barsjin anyV suitable or `desired manner. Vln the construction shown for this pursleeve B is turned outwardly in any suitable or desiredmanner, as indicated at G, so as to engage the lower bar securing plate E and hold thefsame in operative relation tov the bars C, `and the turned-'over portion G also engages the outer ends of the shouldered portions f of the bars to hold the same rigidly in place, as `well as pressing the lower plate againstrthe lateral ventensions of the bars. rlhe upper end of the central tube or sleeve B may be secured to the upperplate D in the same manner,

namely by turning over the upper end of of the central tube or sleeve'than the upper ends of these bars, thus forming wedge shaped recesses between theadjacent legs or flanges of each of these bars, and the inner ends a of the legs are driven into these Wedgesh'aped recesses, thus forming a very secure connection between the hub portions of the chair base and the legs, while the dove-tailed shapes.` of the recesses prevent the inner ends of the legs from moving out ofthe recesses. The edges of the bars engage the shoulders a formed on the legs near 4the inner portions thereoil so that any movement ofthe legs relatively to the hub of the base is prevented. v

A lower leg securing plate H may be used in `connection with the hub of the chair' base, if desired, and in the construction shown this lower plate is provided'with ain opening 7L in the central, portion thereof,"v preferably of such shape as topermitthe lower bar securing plate E to .extendinto the opening thereof,V as shown in Figs. l and Ll. This lower leg securing plate has laterally extending arms 7L of usual`construction. This plate and the arms hthereof are provided withY a.V plurality of holes through which screws may pass which enter. into the lower facesofthe legs Aand serve the usual function of'strengthening the base of thechair. TheV legs yare preferably also rovided with the usual recessestl arranged neyond the edges ofthe legV grippingbars C andintowhich the sides` of filler Vp ieces l may enter, which'conceal the securing means which holdv the legs together and give the chairbase a finished'appearance.

I claim -as my invention LA hub for/a chairbase including a plurality of leg grippingbars' of angle shaped cross section' spacedfapart to form between them recesses to receive the chair legs, a plate to whichV one end of each Vof said bars is rigidly secured, another plate having recesses adaptedto'receive portions extending from the other ends ofsaid bars, and a central member secured to. said plates and holding said other plate in aposition in which said portions of Vsaid bars are retained in said recesses.

A hub for a chair base including a plurality of leg grippingl bars of' angle shaped cross sectionispaced apart tov form, between them recesse'sto receive the chair legs, a plate to whichon'eendof each of said bars is 'rigidly secured, another plate having recesses adapted to ,receive portions extending from the otherends of said bars,-V and a central tubular'member having itsopposite ends turned over against said plates to press said plates against saidbars for holding said ortions of said bars in the recesses of said other plate."l
