Be it known that I, DOMTNIOK Evan- UELIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronx, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chairs and. more particularly to that class known as folding chairs, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a chair which can be quickly and readily folded into compact form and, at the same time, easily set up ready for use.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a folding chair having clamping means whereby when the chair is set up ready for use, it will rigidly connect the detachable parts of the chair so as to form a firm and rigid. seat when the chair is in its set up position.

With. the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding chair embodying the improvements of my invention, parts being shown in their operative position; and

Fig. 2 is an elevation of the chair with the parts folded, a part being shown partially broken away.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the back portion of my improved chair which includes the two upright side members 2 rigidly connected by means of the transverse members 3. The back rest of the chair formed by having the upright slats 4 arranged in spaced relation between the two uppermost transverse members 3. The seat 5 is hingedly connected to the back portion 1, as shown at 6 and disposed beneath the inner edge of the seat and rigidly secured to the back portion 1, are the stops 7 upon which the inner edge of the seat 5 is adapted to rest, when in a horizontal position as illustrated in Fig. 1. The front portion 8 of the chair constitutes the uprights or legs 9 and the transverse Specification of Letters Patent.

members or rungs 10. The front portion 8 is hingedly connected, as at 11 to the side rungs 12. These side rungs 12 are pivotally or hingedly connected to the plates 13, which are rigidly secured to the inner faces of the uprights 2 of the back 1 of the chair. These plates 13 extend inwardly on to the rungs 12 and are pivotally connected to the rungs by means of the pins 14.

From this it will be apparent that in folding the chair, the seat 5 folds upwardly on to the upper end of the back portion, the front portion 8 folding inwardly at its lower end on to the side rungs 12 and the side rungs and front portion fold inwardly toward the back portion 1. The upper ends of the legs 9 are provided with longitudinal bores 15, adapted to receive the threaded lugs 16 which project downwardly from the under face of the seat 5. I11 clamping the seat 5 into position, I provide angular plates 17 which are secured to the under face of the seat 5 adjacent the forward edge thereof and the vertical portions of these plates are arranged in spaced relation with the threaded lugs 16, so that when the lugs 16 are disposed within the bores 15, the vertical portions of the plates 17 will be clamped down over the forward edge of the legs 9 to force the threads of the lugs 16 into engagement with the side walls of the bores 15, to pre vent any outward movement of the lugs. From this it will be apparent that after this operation has been carried out, during the folding of the chair, it will provide a rigid construction, whereby any movement on the part of the seat 5 and the legs 9 will be prevented.

It will be apparent that I have provided a simple and durable chair wherein the various parts comprising the chair can be readily folded into compact form to occupy minimum space when packing, or when not in use and, at the same time, the same can be readily set up in position ready for use and when in such position, is securely clamped and held against movement by means of the plates 17 and the threaded lugs 16. My improved chair, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction, and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the ap ended claims.

Iavingthus fully described my invention, What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1'. A folding chair including front and rear legs, a seat pivoted to the rear legs and adapted to engagethe front legs when in operative position, said front legs having longitudinal sockets in their upper ends, threaded lugs carried by the seat for engagement in said sockets, and angular clamping plates fixed to the seat in spaced relation to the lugs and havingtheir vertical portions resiliently engaging the outer faces of the upper ends of said front legs and cause the threads of thelugs to bind against the Walls of the sockets.

2. A folding chair including front and rear pairs of legs, bars pivotally connecting the corresponding front and rear legs to each other, a seat hingedly mounted at one of its ends upon the rear edges, said front legs being foldable with respect to the connecting bars and the seat being foldable upon the rear legs to lie in a plane parallel therewith, said front legs having longitudinal sockets in their upper ends, threaded lugs carried by the seat for engagement in said sockets, and angular clamping plates fixed to the seat in spaced relation to the lugs and having their vertical portions rcsiliently engaging the outer faces of the upper ends of said front legs and cause the threads of the lugs to bind against the walls of the sockets.
