Description

P. B. MYERS.
Larpet-Stratchers. No.157,022. Patented Nov-17,1874.
WITNESSES. INVENTOR A ttoq-n ays.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PLATT B. MYERS, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,022, dated November 17, 1874; application filed May 5, 1874.
I forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my carpet-stretcher.
A represents the stretcher-head, made of a single bar of wood or metal, and provided on its under side with hooks a a, which are set in two or more rows, serpentine, or in any other suitable way, only so as not to be all on a line, as, if so placed, they would all catch in one thread of the carpet and be apt to injure the same.
The head A is, by two cords, b I), connected with a hook, B, and these cords, between the head and the hook, pass through a roller, D, which is provided with spokes or handles 01 d, as shown.
The carpet being tacked down along one edge, the hook B is fastened at the opposite edge to the wash-board, or to the floor near the wash-board, and the head A is, by its hooks a a, fastened to the carpet. By now turning the roller D by its spokes d cl, the cords b b will be wound up, drawing and stretching the carpet so that it can be tacked on that side.
In some instances it is desirable to have the roller close to the toothed bar, and in other instances farther from it hence it will be seen that the roller D is movable upon the cords b b. so thatit can be adjusted either near to or far from the board A or hook B, as the operator may prefer.
By having this roller thus movable on the cords the latter is prevented from being quick- 1y worn or cut out, as would be the case if the roller were stationary on the cords. When the cords become worn they can be easily detached from the board, roller, and hook, and new ones readily replaced therefor. My device, as constructed, can be folded in a very small compass for transportation or storing away, and can be very economically manufactured, and easily repaired in case of breakage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described carpet-stretcher, consistin g of the board A, with teeth a a, the cords b b, the perforated movable roller D, with spokes d d, and the hook B, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of April, 1874.
PLATT B. MYERS. W'itnesses:
