HOOK AND EYE.
Application filed April 6, 1925. Serial No. 21,129.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. CONAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, inthe county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hook and Eye, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel form of hook and eye, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hook and eye having means for locking the hook and eye together to prevent accidental disconnection thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be operatedto readily disconnect the sections of the hook and eye.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a hook and eye constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the
eye portion of the fastener is indicated at 5 and the hook portion is indicated at 6.
The eye portion includes a length of sheet metal having outwardly extended ears 7 apertured to accommodate suitable securing threads whereby the device may be secured to a garment.
The reference character 8 indicates a boring arm which is formed integral with the eye portion and as shown, is bent rearwardly to overlie the hook portion 6 for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
The free end of the arm 8 is bent upwardly at 9 to permit the hook section to be readily inserted thereunder.
Formed integral with the eye portionand 1 extending upwardly and inwardly therefrom, are flanges 10, the inwardly extended portions 11 thereof overlying the base of the eye section and in spaced relation therewith to provide a clearance for the hook section when it is inserted in the eye section.
An opening indicated at 12 is formed in the eye section ata point intermediate the side edges thereof and directly under the inwardly extended end portions 11 of the flanges 10, which opening is adapted to accommodate the tongue 13 which is formed by stamping a portion of the hook section from the main or body portion thereof as shown clearly by Figure 3 of the drawing.
Flanges 14 extend upwardly from the side edges of the hook portion and are adapted to engage thefianges 10 to prevent lat eral movement or twisting of one section with respect to the other section.
Openings indicated at 15 are formed in the hook section for the reception of suitable securing thread whereby the hook section of the fastener may be secured to a garment.
When it is desired to connect the sections of the fastener, it is only necessary to move the hook section under the arm 8, whereupon the tongue 13 will automatically move within the opening 12 to the end that it will engage one wall of the opening 12 and restrict the reverse movement of the hook section.
Should it be desired to disconnect the sections, it is only necessary to swing the hook section upwardly in the direction of the arrow as shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, whereupon the tongue 13 will disengage the wall of the opening 12 permitting the sections to be easily separated.
I claim A fastener including a hook section and an eye section, said eye section having an opening, said eye section having an integral arm bent upwardly and forwardly, the forward end of the arm terminating at a point an appreciable distance beyond the forward edge of the eye section, a hook section, a
tongue stamped from the body portion and depending therefrom, said tongue adapted to fitin the opening to connect the hook and eye sections, said arni engaging the hook section to force the tongue Within the opening, and said hook section having upstanding lateral flanges adapted to embrace the side edges of the arm throughout a portion of the length of the arm, to guide the hook section into the eye section. 10 in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
