UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SLIDE FASTENER Daniel I. Reiter, New York, N. Y., assignor to v Gilda Corporation of America, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 1, 1936, Serial No. 71,994
3 Claims. (01. re-207) This invention relates to slide fastening devices slide fastener device in its entirety and which is and more particularly to such type of fastening shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing as being device as set forth in U. S. Letters Patent No. operatively associated with a bag ii. The bag 2,013,706, granted to Louis Wiesenfeld and Na- II may be constructed of any flexible material, 5 than Kase under date of September 10, 1935. one side of which is open as at I2, the edges of. 5
In slide fastening devices of the-kind set forth the walls of the bag at the opening i2 being in the above mentioned prior patent, the same informed with offset beads i3--i3. The beads l3 cludes a plurality of slide fastener members are offset so that when the walls of the bag are fixedly connected at spaced distances along a brought together in closed relation, one head flexible element, the fastening members in turn laps the other as clearly shown in Figure 2 of 1c being slidably associated with the bead edges the drawing. of an opening to be closed to draw the edges to- The slide fastener device it includes a plurality gether when the fastening device is in closed of substantially U-shaped slide fastener memposition, and for releasing the bead edges to bars M which are fixedly connected at spaced facilitate spreading of the alls of the opening distances to a flexible element in the form of a 15 when the fastening devi is in open position. chain i5.
The main object of this invention is to reduce Each of the slide fastener members i4 is conthe friction between the slide fastener members structed of a single piece of flat stiff bendable and the edges of the article on which they are metal, the same being bent into substantially captively and slidably associated which will pro- U-shape to provide a rounded bight portion it 20 vide a freer sliding movement of the fastener I and straight leg portions ii and it. The termimembers to prevent accidental jamming of the nal end of the leg portion 98 is bent inwardly as same during sliding movement, and to reduce at it and thence outwardly in rounded form to wear of the material from which the article is provide an eye 20. By reference to Figure 2 it constructed. will be seen that the eye 20 is inwardly offset 25 Anotherfeature of the invention resides in a with respect to the leg it for a purpose to be slide fastener device having the above mentioned presently explained.
feature which does not increase the cost of man- The leg i'i has its terminal end provided with ufact'ure over that of the slide fastener device an inwardly punched teat or protuberance 2t, set forth in the above mentioned patent. the same being disposed opposite the rounded 30 Other objects of the invention will appear as inwardly bent portion it on the leg it. In Figthe following specification is read in conjunction ures l to 5 of the drawing, the teat 2i is roundwith the accompanying drawing, in which, ed and has its inner surface convex so as to Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag equipped provide a minimum bearing contact with one of with my improved slide fastener device. the side walls of the bag it. The inner rounded portion of 55 the eye 20 and the rounded teat 2| provide a minimum contact surface with the side walls of the bag and form a restricted entrance to prevent accidental pulling off of the members M from 5 the beaded edges.
To prevent accidental separation of the slide fastener member I from the bag, it is customary to captively secure one of the end fastener members l4 to the bag and this anchored member is 10 designated by the letter A. Thus an operator by grasping the other end slide fastener member may move the same toward the right in Figure 1 and slide all of the fastener members to a position at the right side of the bag, the anchor 15 member A serving as a stop. To close the fastening device, the free end slide member I4 is pulled toward the left to the position shown in Figure 1. By providing the minimum contacting surfaces between the terminal ends of the legs of the 20 U-shaped fastener members, the friction between the members and the walls of the bag is greatly reduced, thus permitting a freer sliding movement of the slide fastener members and a reduction of wear between the said members and the 25 walls of the bag.
Whereas I have illustrated the fastening device in association with a bag, it will be understood that the fastening device is adaptable for use on many other articles.
30 In Figures 6 to 10 inclusive, I have illustrated modified forms of proturberances which may be formed on the leg l1, all of which are punched inwardly from the leg and disposed inwardly of the confines of the edges of said leg. For in- 5 stance, in Figures 6 and '7 the protuberance is elongated and designated 22, the same extending in a direction transversely on the leg on which it is formed. The protuberance 22 is well rounded on its inner side but in Figure 8 there is shown 40 a protuberance 23 which has its inner side pointed with the pointed end rounded. In Figures 9 and 10 of the drawing, the protuberance 24 is cone shaped with the tip of the cone rounded to avoid a. sharp edge.
While I have shown and described what I consider to be the most practical embodiments of my invention, I wish it to be understood that such changes and alterations as come within the appended claims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:--
1. A slide fastener comprising a U-shaped slide member having relatively thin flat terminal 'leg' portions, one of said leg portions terminating in an inwardly offset round eye, a teat extending inwardly from the other leg portion of said U- shaped slide member opposite the said eye and having a rounded crown portion adapted to coact with said eye during sliding engagement of the slide fastener with opposite sides of an article when in use.
2. A slide fastener comprising a U-shaped slide member formed from a single piece of stiff flat bendable material, an inwardly extending eye formed on the terminal end of one of the legs of said Ushaped slide member, and an inwardly extending teat formed on the other leg of said U-shaped slide member inwardly of the confines of the edges thereof and disposed opposite said eye, said teat having-a rounded crown portion.
3. A slide fastener comprising a single piece of stiff fiat bendable material bent into -U-shape to provide a bight portion and leg portions, a round eye formed on the terminal end .of one of the leg portions and projecting inwardly of the plane of the inner face thereof, and a rounded protuberance struck inwardly from the other leg portion and disposed opposite said eye for coaction therewith when the slide fastener is in use upon an article to be closed thereby.
