Description

Patented Jan. 19, 1926.
PATENT OFFICE.
JACK BROWNE, 0F OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA.
`CONTAINER FOR AUTOMOBILE REGISTRATION CARDS.
Application led August 26, 1925. Serial No. 52,620.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACK BRowNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma City, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Containers for Automobile Registration Cards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention pertains to containers for automobile registration cards, or certificates, and the like, for the purpose of identification of the car, and to identify definitely that the car has been registered and the tax thereon paid, and for the purpose of preventing the stealing of the car and the changing of the identification card thereby assisting to cover up the theft.
v The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character, described, which will be easily and economically made and installed, easily applied to `the instrument board of any make of car; permits easy examination and inspection of the card at any time; prevents the opening of the container and the changing of the certificate of registration without easy detection; protects the State through which the certificate issues in their certificates regularly issued, and from changing those already issued to be attached to other cars on which the tax has not been paid and the certificates not regularly issued therefor.
The invention, novel features, `details of construction, combination of parts, and other objects of the invention will be hereinafter more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying one-sheet drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is hereby made to the drawing forming a part of this application, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled container;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the device on the line A-A of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevation view of the seal;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the slide for containing the registration certiiicate when slipped into the container.
Likel characters of reference designate like parts in all the figures.
The device consists of a metal container mounted on the instrument-board 12 of a car, and on the side of said instrumentboard facing the front seat of the car, and is held securely in place by male screw members 11 therethrough, and washers 9 around said male screw members 11 and on the outside' of said instrument-board 12, said male screw members are helically threaded to fit similarly threaded female screw members 10 on the inner side of said instrument-board. The outside of said container 1, 3, on its side nearest the instrulnent-board 12 has two bulged or raised portions a fitting said male screw members 11, which causes the main body of the container to be held away from` the instrument-board 12 and permits the sealstrap l5 to pass entirely around the container between said bulged or raised portions 3a. The container both at the front and the back has a slot 14 therethrough for inserting the sealstrap 15. One of the ends of the container is entirely closed. The other end is open for inserting the slide 6. The slide 6 is a plane surface except that at one end of the slide the metal `is flanged upwardly 7 and inwardly 8. Before being inserted into the open end of the container, the flat registration certificate or card 5, face-up, and a glass or isinglass strip 4 thereover, each having a slot in their ylower central portion conjugate with slot 13 of said slide and slot 14 of said container, are placed on said slide one end of each of which enters the` groove 20 of said slide fitting into the lower open corner 2 of said outer container thereby entirely closing the open end of said outer container. After the slide and contents are so inserted in said outer container that the slots in each of the outer container, slide, card, or certificate, and isinglass are conjugate the seal-strap 15 is placed across the front of said outer container, preferably with the seal 16 at the bottom central portion of said container and between said two bulged members 3a, said seal-strap 15 is then passed tightly over the upper edge of the container and down over the back thereof and between its back and the instrument-board 12, and between said bulged members 3*, then brought forward through the lower central conjugate slot in the container, slide and certificate, where the end 17 thereof is sealed at perforations 18 and 19 with the seal 16.
Figure 3 shows a seal-strap and seal member. This is a standard seal, and is not claimed as new in this invention, the preterred type of themsealstrap and seal for the purposes intended is the Tyden seal, or 'lyden car seal, or of that type. The matter on the seal-strap heilig likely to be varied by the statutes ot the various Statesl using this container, no speeiiic lettering and numbering is suggested herein hut the Space is left open for such code letters and numerals as may7 be fariously provided tor in the different States statutes, or rules. In this connection it is distinctly required that the length of the seal-strap be only of sutlicient length to enable 4the seal to be once fastened and sealed, and so that any after breaking thereof entirely prevents its being again used by the same seal and sealstrap, and also prevents its being again drawn toget-her to eifect the appearance ot being freshly sealed even in a cursory examination.
It will be observed it is absolutelyT impossible Without breaking up or destroyingl the instru1nent-board, 12, or tearing up the container l completely, or breaking the seal 16, or the seal-strap 15, to get at the screw members 11 and l() for the purpose of releasing and removingr them and thereby get at the inside of the container and to the certificate or card.
The matter to be placed on the certificate or card is also not suggested herein as that may be varied hy the ditlerent State:
statutes or rules where the container will be used.
From the description ot' the one-sheet at eompanying drawing and the speeitication the advantages ot the making, construction, installing, operation and applying ot the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains; hut` it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made Without deliarting from the principle ot the invention, or sacrificing any ot its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is;
A metallic container, as described, having one open end, and comprising a metallu-I slide having one L-shaped end slidably litting into said open end of said container, a certificate and a sheet ot isinglass ther-cover, fitting in groove in said L-shaped end, and into said container, slots in lliront and back of said container and in said slide, certificate and sheet ot isinglass conjugate with each other, a seal-strap passingr therethrough and around said container' between raised portions on hack thereof, and sealed taut around said container by a metallicY seal, male and female screw members securely fastening container to instrumentboard of an automobile.
