Fig. l is a plan and Fig. 5 a side view of ther seal proper; f 4 y Figs and 7 are respectively a longitudinal section anda cross-section on the line 7 -7 of' 'Fig G illustrating a modilication.v Y f Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of another form. Fig. 9 is a persp box, closed. 1
Referring to the embodiments of the invention illustrated the box has side walls l ective view of the completev and end wallsQ and a cover 8 with a flange t 'iitting around the top of the sides and ends. It may be hinged orfotherwise fastened at ther end opposite that-which is to be sealed. vOnly the sealed end is illustrated. The endv wall 2 has a portion projecting-up through a slot in the cover. This projection has 'a pawl 6 cutout'on three sides and bent baclrtoform the pawl 6 co-operates and which serves` also to form a chamber toreceive the end of lthe seal. The metal is bent down also to form an end portion S l'learing` against -theprojoc-- tion 5 of the end wall or' the box. This por-Y tion S terminates a slight distance above the top oli' the box cover 3. There is also a slot 9 through the portion 5 of the end wall'and locatedV just above the cover. Fastenedon the inside or" the cover is a plate 10 having a flange ll extending up to about the top of the cover and inline with the part 8 'so as to leave betweenthe two a slot similar to the slot 9 inthe end wall..

S5 These boxes* are lusuallystamped out ofy sheetmetal. :The :modiiication in shape ot the parts illustrated is adapted also Vfor eco-y nomical stamping from sheet rnetal.` And the .seal likewise is a simple sheet metal stamping 9o which :can be easily. broken byvbending it baclrandforth. -f -Z *y l y. mod-ined construction of the end of the cover is illustratedV inaFig. V6. Here the platelf which is unitedto they insideiot 923A `nl the cover (by welding, rivetingr'or otherwise) has atlange 17 extending` up pastfthev 'slot .()jin the projection 5 ofthe end wall ofi thobox, the flange 17 having a slot 18 therein 4corresponding to and registering with the '10C slot 9. The part of the lflange 17V abovethe i slot might be omitted, vthe spring linger `lll bearingrdirectly against'thepart 5, butit is preferable to have (17) or an equivalent partl ofthecover in order to make it more'diliii- 105* cult to tamper withthe seal. f V
in boxes of this characterit has heretofore i been the practice to provide apertured Sprojections on the Outside through vv'hichawire was passed, the ends or the wire being im Y brought' together under a lead seal. To open .such a box both the' Wire andthe seal were destroyed.
Y The seal of iny present invention is annat-V ter of very trifing oost, much less than that of the previous combinations of Wire andv seal. Thererare also certain advantages, in
the prevention of thievery ,of cui-rent, inliaving special seals which are fitted only for certain boxes. This is7 in a-considerable f measure, tru-e of the present invention because Y the sealisinadeof'a Width and thickness, as
proper,for Trires rand other parts.
Weil 'as length, toespeci'aliy adapt it to boxes niade with a Certain size of' slots and ot reoessesv Within the Cover, .so as to substantially il the slots and prevent'the introduction of a ivirethrough-the slots after sealing.
The raised portion 7 of the cover is ads -vaiitag-eous'- in leaving, when Vthe seal. is inV iaeef more unobstructed rooin'in' the box This sohenie also lessons the chance of the sealing' 4liasps getting'-'tangled With or into Contact iv, n the'eieotrie Wires, and the plate l0 serves a similar purpose.
lvlfowever, the invention is useful also in sealing boxes Without the special provisions referred to.A Fig. 8; illustrates a .simple box and cover with a flange i of the cover coining doivn ov-er'tlie endvvall l2 oi the box aud with registering slots 19 and 20 in the overlapping parts, 'through -u'hieh the shanlrl?)` 'of the sealing hasp can be passed until the spring` finger 14 thereof locks againstthe inner face of the ,wail of the box.
Fig. 9- shows the veoinplete box.v The' cover 3 has its flange overlying the body l and is fastened at the rear end by ordinary hinges 2l'. Y rifhe Apawi 6 presses on the raisedvportion 7 ot the Cover which forms the `chainberinto which the end of the seal projects When it is inserted in the position shown this figure.
Though have described with great partireularityifoi"fdetail certain embodiments of e my invention, yetitis not to be understood therefrom that the invention restrictedV to rthe particular embodiments disclosed. Various finodications thereof may be ina-de by those skilled in the art Without departure from the invention as definedjin the following,` claims. y What I claim is: f l. The combination with the overlapping lslotted portions of a box and cover of a seal adapted to be insertedthrough said slot and to be automatically' Caught and held in sealing position, said seal comprising a iat piece of easily brealable sheet instal, the outerporN tion of which can be broken off and the inner Aportion oi which can then be pushed inward beyond sealing position, and means for preventing` its beine` pushed inward beyond sealing position Wnen l 2. A sealingha'sp made of a single integral flat piece of' easily brealrable sheet metal havthe outer portion is not broken ofi.
inO an inner ooi'tion with a lookin@ member l to be auto-inatieally caught and held in seaii-ng position, said seal comprising a piece of easily breakableiuateriahthe outer portion of vwhich A@an be breken ott? and the inner portion of which can then be pus-hed inward o. The sealing hasp ofelaiin 2 having a beyond sealing` position andrneans for p'reventing` its being pushed inward beyond sealing position when the outer portion isy not bolen oil. f Y' 5. A sealing` liasp made of av sinele integral b` i. piece ofeasilybreakable material having an inner portion With a looking member thereon and an outer portion Whichprevents the niev-V ingoi the remainder beyond the sealing position and which can ybe brolren oi'iqv to permit Y,
sueh moving. Y
l In Witness whereof, I havehei'eunto signed y lilly 1131118.
