IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,862, dated November 17, 1874; application filed J une 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLVENUs WALKER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Inkstands, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a cover for fountain-inkstands which shall serve to assist in filling the same, and prevent the corrosion of the hingepin of the lid; and it consists of ametal collar, having at one side a circular curved shield, projecting upward from the inner portion or lid-seat of the collar, its upper portion being curved inwardly, so as to serve in filling the fountain when held in proper position, and, when in use upon such inkstand, shield the hinge-pin of the lid from corrosion by the evaporation of ink from the dipping-orifice, which is surrounded and covered by them. By this means the cover is confined to a small space upon the base of the inkstand, and, when the lid is thrown back or open, it rises but a short distance above the same, and consequently does not interfere with pen-holders placed upon a pen-rack attached to the base of such inkstands, or otherwise.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the cover and fountain-inkstand combined. Fig. 2 is a top view of same with lid thrown back or open.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In covers for fountain or other inkstands, the collar H, provided with shield K, for the purpose specified, in combination with the hinged lid J, as set forth.
