Description

P. KLINGSPOR, Jr. Inkstand.
No. 204,054. Patented May 21,1878.

UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH KLINGSPOR, JR, OF SIEGEN, WESTPHALIA, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 204,054, dated May 21, 1878; application filed April 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH KLINGS- POR, Jr., of Siegen, Westphalia, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a peculiar arrangement whereby the depth of the ink or fluid for the pen to dip into will always be the same, independent of the depth of the inkstand or of the quantity of ink in the same 5 and the invention consists of a floating chamber having the bottom for the pen to dip upon, whereby the depth of ink to be communicated to the pen can be easily regulated.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section at line A B, Fig. 2, of an inkstand embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an outside view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section at line a b, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section at line a d, Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is avertical section of an inkstand spun in metal and arranged with my improvement.
Similar letters represent similar parts.
E is the inkstand, made in any desired size or shape and of any suitable material, provided with acover, F, having a suitable opening, f, for the pen to pass into the ink-stand.
An extra cover may be applied to cover up the inkstand and the opening f when not in use, if found desirable.
The bottom lof the inkstand is preferably raised up in the middle, so as to form a channel or receptacle, m, around it in the bottom for any sediment of the ink.
In this inkstand a cup chamber, H, is placed, provided on its upper periphery with a cork ring, G, .on the outside, of such size and dimensions as to float the chamber H on the top of the ink. Instead of making this ring G of cork, any other suitable material may be used having the required buoyancy to float this chamber H; or said chamber H may be arranged with an air-chamber at its outside capable of floating the chamber on the surface of the ink; but for cheapne'ss and practicability I prefer a ring made of cork.
This chamber H may be made in two parts, the upper part being permanently attached to the cork ring G and the lowerpart attached by separate pieces to said cork ring G, (see Fig. 5,)
whereby the depth of ink to be supplied to the pen can be easily regulated. ,To the inside of the bottom of this chamber H a piece of india-rubber, k, or any other suitable soft material, is attached, to protect the point of the pen when dipped into the inkstand. Near the bottom of this chamber H, at a level with the top of the india-rubber plate It, openings i are made in the side of said chamber, to facilitate the cleaning out of any sediment which may collect in the same.
It will be perceived that, whenever the inkstand is filled with ink or writing-fluid and the chamber H inserted, the same will always float on the top of the ink in consequence of the buoyancy of the surrounding cork ring or its equivalent, and the pen, when dipped into the inkstand, will come in contact with the bottom or with the india-rubber plate is on the bottom of the chamber H, and consequently always receive only'a certain amount of ink, regulated by the depth of this chamber, independent of the depth of the inkstand or the quantity of ink which may be in the same.
The openings 4. in the sides of the chamber H permit the admission of the ink to the inside of said chamber.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with an inkstand, the floating chamber H, provided with a cork ring, G, or its equivalent, the openings'z', and the india-rubber or other suitable covering 70 in its bottom, arranged and combined in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
2. The chamber H, made in two parts, and
attached to the cork ring G, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
