ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT.
Application filed July 10, 1925- Serial' No. 42,783.
To aZZ 1072 072151 may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT C. GETMAN, a citizen of the United States, 'and resident of Oneonta, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved ad- 10 justable support for use in erecting scaffolding, constructing temporary work benches, supporting coal chutes, ete., my purpose, generally speaking, being to provide a device of this kind that is cheap and easy to 1 produce, strong, durable, readily adjustable and that is thoroughly reliable and efficient in use.
With the foregoing and other purposes in view, my invention consists in the novel feathe different views Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an adjust-- able support embodying the novel and essential features of my invention;

Fig. 3, a detail section showing a modified form of connection between certain elements of the support.
By reference to the drawings it will be observed that my support may be con structed cheaply and easily substantially in its entirety from ordinary pipe, pipe fittings and rods, although, of course, other materials may be employed in its production if so desired.
In its preferred embodiment my support consists essentially of a pair of spaced, preferably parallel tubular side members and 12, respectively, desirably in the form of pipe sections, rigidly connected together at or adjacent to their lower ends by a cross member in the form of a pipe or rod 14 and at or adjacent to their upper ends by a cross member in the form of a pipe or rod 16, the
' latter having depending therefrom, intermediate its ends, a tubular leg member18, preferably a section of pipe, adapted as 55 shown in Fig. 2, to be adjusted to an inclinatures of construction, combination and ar-- tion with respect to the members 10 and 12 to sustain the latter in substantially upright position, in which position said members are held against sidewisetilting due to their spacement' and connection with one another, whereby a coal chute, a bench top, scaffolding or the like placed upon either of the cross members will be rigidly supported against the possibility of collapse.
In order to permit the leg member 18 to be swung to different inclinations with respect to the side members 10 and 12 to secure the most effective angular relation between such parts when the support is erected on a sloping or irregular surface the cross member 16 preferably has threaded connections at its ends with T-fittings 20 carried by the members 10 and 12, the threads permitting said cross member to be rotated and at the same time serving to maintain the upper ends of the members 10 and 12 substantially rigidly connected through said cross member. If desired, however, connections such as shown in Fig. 3- may be made between the side members 10 and 12 and the ends of the cross member 16, such connections being formed by extending the ends of the cross member 16 through openings in the side members 10 and 12 and engagin a pair of pins 22-through the cross mem or one to either side of a wall of each side member. This arrangement holds the top portions of the side members against being moved towards or away from one another andv at the same time permitsrotation of the cross member to permit adjustment of the leg 18 carried thereby.
Slidably engaged in each of the side nienrhers 10 and 12 and in the leg member 18 are rods 24, 26, 28, respectively, which may be moved inward or outward with respect to said members to lengthen or shorten the effeetive length thereof as is manifest, set screws 30 being threaded in the members 10, 12 and 18 to secure said rods in desired adjusted positions.
Preferably Welded joints are formed between the ends of cross member 14 and the side members 10 and 12 and between the leg member 18 and cross member 16, but as is manifest such joints may be produced by means of T-fittings the same as the joints between the side members 10 and 12 and the ends of cross member 16. Alternatively, elbows might be used to connect the side members 10 and 12 with the ends of cross member 16 were it not desirable to have the upper ends of the side members extend above the cross member 16 to form stops to prevent Whatever might be placed on said cross member from sliding off the ends thereof.
It is believed from the foregoing that the simplicity of my device as well as the ease with which it may be constructed and its sturdiness, when in use, will be appreciated. I desire to point out, however, that while I have herein shown and described certain specific embodiments of my invention, various changes and desirable additions may 15 be made in and to the same within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In an adjustable support, a pair of spaced side members each including a T-fitting near its upper end, a cross member rigidly connecting said side members near their lower ends, a second cross member having threaded engagement at its ends with said T-fittings respectively whereby it may be rotated, and a leg rigidly affixed to said second cross member.
