This invention contemplates the provision of a clothes rod primarily intended for use in closets and the like, and embodies a structure wherein the rod can be quickly and conveniently adjusted to vary its size, and thus accommodate itself to any particular size closet, and frictionally supported in position for use against the opposed walls of the closet.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be better' understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, t-he invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:

The clothes rod Jforming the subject matter of the present invention embodies a hollow tubular section 10 which telescopically receives a threaded section 11, whereby the length of the rod can be varied for the purpose above stated. The outer ends of the respective sections are threaded to accommodate fianges 12 which are preferably associated with the sections in the manner illustratcd. The inner end of the section 1() is provided with a collar 13, while threadedly associated with the section 11 is a nut 14:, the latter being recessed or designed to lit over the collar 13 in the manner clearly illustrated in Fi ure 3. This nut is also provided with a tireaded opening to accommodate the combined handle and locking device shown in Figure 4, the use of which will be presently described.

15 and 16 respectively, w ich are pivotally connected together as at 17, one end of the section 15 being threaded as at 18 to be received by the opening in the nut above referred` to. This device may be made in one piece, but is preferably made in sections in the manner described, so that it can be more conveniently handled for the purpose of turning the nut 14 t-o effect an adjustment of the sec-tion 11 as will be readily understood.

In practice, the handle section 15 is partly threaded within the opening provided in the nut 14, and the nut turned in the proper d'1- rection to vary the. length of the rod, so that the latter can be used in a closet of any particular size. The sections 10 and 11 are moved away from each other until thev flanges 12 effectively engage the opposed walls 19 of the closet, and suflicient pressure can be obtained to frictionally support the rod in position for use. However should either or both of the walls 19 be weak, or

have a tendency to give under pressure, the

flanges 12 may be directly secured to the wall by suitable fastening elements, for the use of which the flanges 12 are provided with openings 20 at suitably spaced points. After the rod has been adjusted to accommodate itself to the opposed walls of the closet or the like, the handle section 15 can be further screwed within the nut to effectivelyy engage the collar 13 on the section 10, and thus utilized to hold the sections 10 and'll of the rod fixed relatively. l/Vhen the use of the rod is not desired it can be folded into a comparatively small article, and the handle separated from the nut 14, so that the entire device will occupy but a minimum of space.

lfVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood, that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

What is claimed is:

A clothes rod of the character described comprising a hollow section, a threaded section slidably fitted within the hollow section, a collar surrounding the hollow section adjacent the 'inner end thereof, a nut threaded on the second mention section and including a hollow body portion roiaahly fitted about the adjacent end of the hollow section and Surrounding said collar, whvreby the adjacent end of the hollow section is reinforced, said nut having an opening in one side, a combined handle and locking device adapted to he partly threaded into the opening and initially used to turn the mit, and subsequentlv used to bind against the said washer to hold the sections fixed relatively in a given position, said handle l0 including two pivotully connected Sections for the purpose specified.
